My Digital Footprint

By: Michelle Hinich

What is a Digital Footprint and why is it important?

A Digital Footprint is anything you post on social media or the internet. Ex: photos, an article you were featured in, a new status, or a page you shared. This is important because it can affect you in a positive way or negative way. If you post positive things on the internet, people will think you are caring. Although, if you post negative things online people may get the impression that you are disrespectful.

What does my Digital Footprint look like?

My Digital Footprint consists of social media, pictures I post, and articles my name is featured in. Some examples of social medias that I use are Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. These accounts all consist of positive feed and impact my footprint in a good way. I think people can infer from my social media accounts that I'm generally a positive, nice person.

What impact does your footprint have on your future?

Your footprint can impact your future because it can help jobs and even colleges determine what type of person you are. Posting positive content is helpful because it can help improve your self image. If a job/college performs a google search on you they will see positive images. With this being said, it is better to post positive content to improve your image. For instance, positing awards, school events you go to, good information about yourself, and activities you are a part of would be helpful to improve your self image. Posting negative content is harmful because it will discourage jobs/colleges when they google you. They will think you are not able to be relied on, irresponsible, and unprofessional. For instance, posting pictures with drugs, alcohol, negative posts about school, or hateful posts about teachers or friends would be harmful to your self image.

What can you do to continue to improve your online identity?

You can post more about school in a positive way or you can post good things you have done in your life. For example, if you post about how you scored a 25 or about on your ACT would be considered positive because it lets people know you care for your education. Which in other words can mean you’re responsible. Also, posting good things you have done in your life will show people that you are a kind caring person. This can include posting pictures of volunteering for events to help out the community, such as Kindness Day at school, to show that you are dedicated to the community, your school, and the well being of other people.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned this semester about maintaining a positive Digital Footprint?

The most important thing I have learned this semester about maintaining a positive Digital Footprint is that one picture can really change your whole future. This means that if you have a major sports scholarship but the school sees a picture of you online with alcohol in the picture you will most likely be stripped of your scholarship. Even if you are not drinking but you are in the background of the picture they will still strip you of your scholarship. This means that if you are invited to a party with drinking but you are in line to get into a major state school for a sport don’t go. I’m saying this because having one fun night out can change your whole future forever. With this being said, anything you post online can and will affect yourself and your future.
