Caldwell School District Update
From Superintendent Dr. N. Shalene French
September 16, 2021
Spotlight on Elementary Math, Science, and Reading
In addition to improving mathematical understanding, more science resources will be provided for our elementary schools. This includes Mystery Science, which is a web-based resource accessible to teachers and students. In addition, each elementary school will receive a variety of science lab kits so teachers can provide students with opportunities to conduct experiments, test hypotheses, create solutions, and investigate the world of science.
This year our Fourth and Fifth-grade students will participate in Istation assessments, an assessment they have used since Kindergarten. This assessment provides our teachers with timely feedback on their students' learning.
The Caldwell, Nampa, and Notus School Districts, in partnership with 2C Kids Succeed, will each receive a portion of a $750,000 grant from the Idaho Community Grant Program.
Caldwell School District will use our portion of the grant to support Early Learning for children in our preschool collaborative and to support the work of Community Schools.
“Helping parents and families build strong systems of support for robust early childhood learning experiences is a crucial step in children’s success throughout life,” said Tamara Lawson, Federal Programs Director for our District.
With a family-focused approach, our goal is to support student learning, family engagement, and community connections.
Caldwell Student selected as a member of Superintendent Ybarra's Student Advisory Council
Thirteen Idaho public school students from across the state will gather in Boise for the first meeting of Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra’s new Student Advisory Council.
Our own Joselyn Gutierrez from Caldwell High School will serve as a member of Superintendent Ybarra's Council.
Joselyn was one of 13 students selected of the nearly 60 students who applied.
Joselyn's resume includes:
- Member of the Tournament of Champions Team at the 2020 Idaho VEX Robotics State Championship. Joselyn was the driver of the robot.
- Served as Treasurer of the Caldwell Mayor's Youth Advisory Council her junior year.
- Currently serves as Vice President of Caldwell High School's National Honor Society.
We are so proud of Joselyn and know she will be a strong advocate for the youth of Caldwell and for the youth in our state.
Boys & Girls Club coming to Caldwell Schools
On Monday, August 23, 2021, the Board of Trustees welcomed the Boys & Girls Club to the Caldwell School District. The Boys & Girls Club of Nampa has received a grant to expand its services and is working with us to open a Club here in Caldwell. We are finalizing plans to share classroom space at Indian Creek Academy for after-school programs at Van Buren, Washington, and Wilson Elementary Schools.
Reminder: Face Coverings Are Required
On Monday, August 30, 2021, the Board of Trustees approved a face covering requirement through the end of first quarter. The Board will continue to monitor the situation using data from Southwest District Health and site-based reports to determine if further action will need to be taken. Visitors to District facilities are required to wear face coverings. The face covering requirement also applies to school transportation.
The goal of the district is to keep school open and students attending every day.
We encourage our families to support this goal by doing the following to reduce the spread of the virus in our schools:
Please do not send your children to school if they are sick or have been exposed to a COVID positive individual or family member;
If your child is waiting on a COVID test result, please do not send him or her to school;
Please consider getting a COVID vaccination for individuals age 12 or older in your family. Recently, the Pfizer vaccine was fully approved by the FDA. Here’s a site to schedule an appointment: https://phd3.idaho.gov/covid19/#Vaccine.
