News from Winfield Elementary: February 9, 2024
From the Principals, Mrs. Alonzo & Mrs. Hall
Last Friday we kicked off One School One Book with an epic scavenger hunt between the teachers! More than 550 students cheered on staff members and fellow classes to see which grade level could find the most objects in their backpacks. The second grade won with 40 targeted items found! This whole school game was played to introduce our book, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein. We hope you are enjoying our journey of reading this story together!

National Elementary Honor Society
***Students who meet the academic scholarship criterion have been provided an application for NEHS. Those who are interested in membership may complete the application (step 1) and plan to attend the essay-writing session (step 2). Please direct any questions to Chapter Advisors, Mrs. Rechter or Mrs. McBride.
The National Elementary Honor Society chapter of Winfield Elementary is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, responsibility, service, and leadership. Students in grades 4 and 5 are eligible for membership.
For the scholarship criterion, a student must have no more than 3 B’s in their previous two semesters. Each spring those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Application that provides the faculty council with information and examples regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.
After Candidate Applications have been submitted, students will be invited to complete a written essay illustrating examples of their character and leadership which merits their inclusion in NEHS. This student written essay will be completed during a before/after school session.
Any solicited faculty input and all Candidate Application are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.

Please send an extra change of clothing for your child to keep in their locker. Accidents happen on the playground, at lunch or in the classroom that sometimes requires a change of clothing. I have a very limited amount of clothing to lend out in all sizes, so it is super helpful if your child has something of their own here at school. Thanks!
