Create Fraction & Decimal AHAs
Grades 3-6
At a time when understanding for conceptual depth is the goal, this session provides participants with a systematic approach for helping students have fraction and decimal AHAs. Join us as we examine the use of a variety of representations (concrete, pictorial, verbal, and symbolic) to build conceptual depth and computation fluency with fractions and decimals.
We will investigate the importance of:
- completing key foundational experiences
- understanding the meaning of each operation (operation sense)
- using conceptual language
- drawing meaningful pictures & diagrams
- using repeated reasoning and reasoning algebraically to identifying patterns for computation
Included is a sample formative assessment and examples for immediate classroom use.
Learning outcomes include:
- Participants will explore strategies for teaching fractions and decimals.
- Participants will explore how to engage students in the learning of mathematics.
This workshop is offered for $50 per participant for those CESA 10 districts participating in Title II (Abbotsford, Altoona, Augusta, Bloomer, Bruce, Cadott, Colby, Cornell, Eleva-Strum, Gilmanton, Greenwood, Ladysmith, Lake Holcombe, Loyal, Neillsville, New Auburn, Owen-Withee, Spencer, and Thorp), $350 per participant for CESA 10 districts not participating in Title II, and $500 per participant for all others.
