Grave of the Fireflies

Theme: War/Anti-war

Grave of the Fireflies

GOTF is a movie about a brother and his younger sister trying to survive World War 2 in imperial Japan. The themes of war and anti-war are very present in this movie. The movie focuses on the other side of war that many happen to forget about alongside the main fighting; and that is the survival of the innocents caught between the battles. The boy and his sister initially lose their mother after a bombing, and struggle to survive of the very little money they have. They go from place to place, watching their homeland fall apart before their very eyes. Eventually, their struggle ends in failure and the sister dies from malnutrition since all of the food is being rationed out among the troops. After the war was officially declared over, the boy dies of grief and sickness in the subways of Japan as a desperate, homeless, and completely alone person. The theme of anti-war shows through in this movie, as it highlights the extreme hardships that the citizens go through in the crossfire.

Rather than focusing on the more obvious things of war such as the battling and bombing, GOTFF shines more light on the more hidden side of war. The film shows more of the struggle that the innocents go through to survive, the destruction of homeland, and the separation of family.

Quote

"Why must the fireflies die so young?" -Sister

The use of fireflies as a reference towards the young citizens of the warring nations are used since they tend to go unseen in the heat of battle. The quote also shows a child's innocence, and how it is taken away with the destruction around them.

Grave of the Fireflies - Firefly Scene
This scene shows how despite the fact that many people view a warring nation as a place full of terrible people, many of them are just like us: Simple people with families trying to survive and supporting what they believe is right.
