The Power of Love:
Conscious Discipline defines compassion as a way of viewing the world through the eyes of interdependence and interconnection. In other words "what you offer others, you strengthen within yourself". Choosing to see the best in others defines both them and us in the highest possible way. Conscious Discipline encourages us to assume positive intent in others (including adults and students). Our adult judgments are usually based on filters that we've developed over time which can cause us to assume the worst of intentions in others.
The skill of positive intent starts in the heart, but in turn, can open our minds. It literally upshifts the brain from our lower (survival state) centers (when we assume the negative) to our higher (executive state) centers (when we assume the positive).
Assigning negative intent to children's behavior does three things:
- Defines the core of the child and his behavior as bad
- Throws us into the lower centers of the brain where blame and punishment are our only options
- Defines the child as bad in the eyes of their classmates and fellow teachers.
Assigning positive intent to children's behavior does three things:
- Defines the core of the child as good enough and the child's behavior as needing to change.
- It keeps us in the higher centers of the brain where solutions and change are possible, and we can wisely discern which executive skills the child is missing to begin the teaching process.
- Defines the child as one who makes mistakes and is willing to learn in the eyes of classmates and fellow teachers.
Conscious Discipline actually has multiple tools/strategies to build positive intent but the simplest one is to A.C.T.
- A - Acknowledge the child's deepest desire and intent.
- "You wanted __________" or "You were hoping _____________"
- C - Clarify what skills to use.
- "When you want ____________ then say (or do) ________________"
- T - Take time to Practice
- "Say (or do) it now for practice."
This tool/strategy is something I've shared before, but it helps us to focus on reteaching the correct behavior instead of passing judgment on the child for "bad" behavior. This will also help build a culture of assuming positive intent within our classrooms.
Here's an additional video from Conscious Discipline that connects with the skill of assuming positive intent in others:

On-Going Reminders
- If you send a student to the focus room please do so with one of the tickets Casey has provided, that way she knows why they are there. If they do not have a ticket they will be sent back to class.
- Please remember to give yourself credit for the events you attend. Each teacher is expected to attend 3 after school events. Next year we will move to a model where each grade level and department is represented at each PTA meeting.
