PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
We had our first night of family conferences this week. This is a great way to gain information about your child’s learning. You may get great information that your child is not sharing with you about school. If your children are like mine, they talk very little about school.
Parents will often tell me that when they ask their child about school, they give minimal information. That is normal as they grow up and gain independence. “Nothing,” is often the answer when you ask them what they did in school today or “Fine,” when asked about their day.
This week, I revisit an article I wrote years ago. I provide some strategies and resources about how to engage with your child about school and day. Below is an excerpt and some resources about talking with your child about school and their day in general.
Recently, I have been requiring my children to ask questions about my day as well. As they learn to be sociable and caring children (and eventually adults), it is important for them to ask others how they are doing and inquire about the lives of others. Whenever we have the rare opportunity to all sit down as a family at dinner, we all talk about our day and practice asking questions of other family members.
Below are some resources with different questions you can ask your child to spark conversation about school, social interactions, and their daily life.

The detour around the closure is Hyland-Croy Road to Brand Road, then Muirfield Drive to Perimeter Drive and then Post Road or Hyland-Croy Road to Mitchell Dewitt Road, then Industrial Parkway to Post Road.
Family Conferences are Coming: Feb 22 & 28
Our family conferences are coming up on February 22 & 28. We will offer both in-person or virtual options. Your child’s teacher will reach out soon (if not already) to begin scheduling your conference.
During conferences, your child’s teacher will address three main criteria:
What I know about your child as a learner and a person
Evidence of ways I’ve gotten to know your child using formal and informal data
Next instructional steps for instruction
All families are offered the opportunity to have an individual conference with their child’s teacher. However, at our spring conference, many grade levels offer student-led conferences. Student-led conferences provide the students to be actively engaged in their own growth, reflection, and communication about their learning and process. Feel free to take advantage of the options for individual conferences, student-led conferences, or both.
If you have specific questions about your child that you want the teacher to prepare for and address within the allotted time, please reach out to let them know. In addition, be sure to check your child’s grade card in Infinite Campus prior to conferences so you are also aware of your child’s learning and progress.

Winter MAP Student Data
The MAP assessments give us the ability to measure student achievement and academic growth across time. Students participate in the MAP Reading and MAP Math assessments three times a year (grades 1-8). The MAP 2-5 and MAP 6+ assessments allow us to identify students as gifted in the areas of math and/or reading. MAP scores in the 95th-99th percentile meet the Ohio Department of Education requirements for gifted identification. Students scoring in the range for a gifted identification will be supported in their regular classroom setting through high-quality, differentiated instruction. MAP results are now visible to parents in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Please follow the steps below to find your child's fall MAP results. Additional information about MAP can be found here.
