Final Week: Term 3 - March 8 - 12
Good evening, JMS Parents!
Spring break is right around the corner! Please be sure your student has all their work turned in as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher to ensure they can finish Term 3 strong!
As per the message received Friday evening, ORS district and middle school administrators met to discuss the best instructional option for our students. All students currently in the hybrid model (this does not included ConnectOR students) will return to in-person learning on a regular schedule, five days per week, starting Monday, March 29, 2021.
JMS will continue to help mitigate Covid-19 and other illness transmission for our students and staff. It is very important that if your child has any symptoms, (headaches, runny nose, cough, temperature, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, etc.) that you PLEASE KEEP THEM HOME.
Regarding morning drop off, please utilize the Bus Loop (near the cafeteria/softball field) after 7:10am (when no buses are present) to drop off your child. Please be sure your student is ready to exit the vehicle, so traffic is not held up. JMS Administration will be working to wave you to the very front, so we can always keep traffic off Fairbanks Road. At dismissal, you can use both loops, as buses exit the loop no later than 2:46pm each day. This will also expedite the pickup process at the end of the day.
Make up picture day orders have arrived! If you ordered pictures after makeup picture day, those pictures should be sent home Monday or Tuesday of next week. Students will receive picture packages in homeroom.
There is a ton of important information in this newsletter, such as 2021 Electives information below, updated curriculum guides, Naka-shi Applications, Parent Climate Survey Results, Lego League opportunities and much more!
As always, the health and safety of our students and staff will remain our number one priority. Please feel free to reach out to our admin team if you have any questions about our Return to School Plan or about the contents of this newsletter.
Have a fantastic week!

Tips from Mr. Fowler - 2021-22 Elective Choices/Curriculum Guides Available
Hello JMS Parents and Students!
We have exciting news for you today; there is a lot of information, so read carefully. I have spent a good amount of time putting together the digital resources so your student can make informed decisions about selecting his or her ELECTIVES for the 2021-2022 school year!
That’s right, the time has already come to start making some plans for the next year. Students and parents will have time to read the curriculum guides and watch videos of the elective courses starting March 7th. Then, the window to select electives will stay open until March 31st. Starting April 1, we will start contacting parents and students who have not selected to help get those electives chosen. So, what are our steps?
March 7 through March 10th:
- 1st- READ the grade level curriculum guides.
- 2nd – WATCH the brief overviews by the grade level counselors and teachers. They will explain what rotational classes you will take, and what options you have a choice in.
- 3rd – DISCUSS what classes fit their interests, academic goals, future career goals, and just seem fun.
March 10th through March 31st:
- 1st – Students log into Skyward, click on Schedule and select electives (ONE for rising 6th graders and TWO for rising 7th and 8th graders). Rising 5th graders (current 4th graders) will select their electives in the fall after they get to JMS.
- 2nd – Students select ALTERNATIVE courses in Skyward. If for some reason the course does not work in their schedule, students should choose TWO elective courses they are also interested in. There are over 12 electives for 7th and 8th graders to choose from, so their alternative choices are important.
So, watch the videos for your grade level, read the guides, have the conversations, and over the next three and a half weeks, discuss what options work best. Be sure your student makes their choice by March 31st ! Counselors will be reaching out the week of March 28 through PE to help students make selections if they are struggling.

Attention 7th Graders - Naka-shi Virtual Student Exchange Applications!
Five JMS students will be selected to represent the Oak Ridge Schools and the City of Oak Ridge as participants in the 31st Anniversary Naka-shi Student Exchange Program. This year will be a virtual exchange. Selected students along with chaperones will learn about Japan and the Japanese culture.
Since it is an exchange program, the same students and chaperones who are selected will partner with a student from Naka. The Virtual Exchange between participants will occur in June.
Applications for the Naka-Shi Student Exchange Program along with the parent permission and questionnaire forms are now available and may be picked up in the guidance department. Once the completed applications are in, the student interviews with the selection committee will begin.
Completed forms must be returned to the guidance office by Monday, April 5th, so interested 7th graders should pick up the forms. You can also download the form below. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mr. John Smith at jrsmith@ortn.edu.
In addition, please see photo to the left! This quilt was the gift we reciprocated after our friends in Naka Shi, Japan sent us hand made masks! The quilt is displayed in Naka’s city hall! Wonderful job!
First Lego League “JMS Trail Challenge”: Now Available For Use!
Jefferson Middle School’s FIRST Lego League team the Atomic Master Brix has had a challenging season this year due to teammates quarantining, a virtual competition, and even starting late yet, the team persevered.
The Atomic Master Brix had one goal for their project this year: creating an innovative solution to encourage students to be more active. They produced an interactive “trail race,” in which students will walk or run to find letters around the trail and decipher the hidden word! This trail challenge is now available for the community to try out!
For this activity, you will need a device capable of internet (a phone preferably) and walking shoes. The “trail race” can be accessed low tech with just pen and paper.
To complete this activity, you will need to go to the Jefferson trails. At the beginning of the trail is an information sheet with a QR code. Scan the QR code to open a website. In this website, you will enter your name, and it will start the timer. That’s when the Trail Race begins!
You walk to find different letters around the trail and use those letters to get the hidden word! But be quick about it, because you’re on the clock!
Once you finish, you can see where your time is on the leaderboard. Happy trails!

Parent Climate Survey Results
In an effort of continuous improvement, each year we involve students, parents and staff in our climate surveys. The surveys are designed to help us identify strengths and areas of improvement in our programs and processes. Thank you to those parents who participated in the survey process. Overall, we had 180 parents participate and that is a significate difference from last year when only 22 parents participated. Thank you! The chart below shows the scores you provided in our three highest and three lowest items.
Based upon the results below, we will continue to look at all facts and address discipline issues per our ORS/JMS Code of Conduct. We have implemented Student Focus Meetings with all grade levels and will work hard to reach out if your child is failing. We have also implemented After School Homework Help, Super Wednesdays and Lunch Bunch and will continue to communicate with students who could benefit from this service. Also, please know you can access Skyward at any time to see a snapshot of your child’s grades, missing assignments, etc. We are also looking forward to bringing all our students back to school after Spring Break. We want to put an emphasis on making sure all students feel as they are a part of our JMS Community!
Please look for these areas of focus strategies to be shared at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. If you desire to see all survey results or you have ideas about how to focus in and improve, please contact our admin team at any time!
Again, we appreciate you filling out the survey and would appreciate you continuing to do so in the future.

6th & 8th Grade Human Sexuality Presentations - This Week in PE!
This week during PE classes, all students in 6th and 8th grade will attend Human Sexuality presentations. Every school year in Physical Education, we provide a Human Sexuality program for our 6th and 8th grade students only. The Human Sexuality program is The Oak Ridge Board of Education approved Human Sexuality program, and it provides age-appropriate information on the emotional, social, and physical aspects of growing up.
If your student is ConnectOR and you would like your students to participate in the program, we will offer the program via Zoom on Friday. 8th graders at 9:35am and 6th graders at 1:50pm. Please contact Coach Bolling at ksbolling@ortn.edu for the Zoom link.
Tennessee law mandates that we have parental permission for students to be involved in this class. Your students received a passive permission form in PE class for the opportunity to opt out of the program, If we do not receive an opt out form, your child will be involved in this program. If you have any questions, or if you do not wish for your student to participate in the program, please contact Coach Bolling at ksbolling@ortn.edu.
