Aspen High School
August 2019
From Principal Tharyn Mulberry
Dear Aspen High School students, parents, and guardians,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! Aspen High School is now embarking on the 131st year of serving the students in Pitkin County. This year, we have adopted the 7 period floating schedule we tested last semester. After polling both staff and students following a test run of two weeks, this bell schedule was selected over the last year’s schedule. It is our hope that this schedule will provide a more consistent instructional model, and provide an embedded meeting time for all of our student meetings and assemblies without impacting instruction. A big thank you to Marc Whitley and the Leadership Team for making these changes!
I would like to formally welcome and introduce the following people to our community: Timbah Bell- Language Arts, Cory Parker-Language Arts, Alexis White-Language Arts, Michelle Weaver-Spanish, Kayla Kawalick-Social Studies, Kate Short-Aviation, and Diane Heath-Art. These returning teachers are ASD employees who have taken on new positions: Becky Oliver-MTSS Coordinator, Scott Zevin-Chemistry, Tara Valentino-ESS, and Dan Perl-Math Interventionist. We will also have three long term subs for much of first semester for the following teachers: Christina Capelli-subbing for Maile Lapenna, Christina Flores-subbing for AnnaBeth Clark, Barbera Uboe-subbing for Brittany Hoefert. Finally, we are still interviewing to fill positions for ESS, College Counseling, and a Technology Integrator.
Last year culminated in the retirement, resignation, or reassignment of the following faculty: Melissa Lustig, Evan Obranovic, Chris Wheatly, Andre Wille, Alex Reginelli, Whitney Thurston, Mandy Stringer, Keala Asher, Paul Stucki, and Luke Murphy. We wish these staff members success in all future endeavors, and we thank them for investing their time and talent for the betterment of the students of Aspen High School.
Parents you will find the building in excellent shape thanks to James Weber and our AMAZING custodial team. If you have time, please note all of the improvements made to our building and thank our custodial team for their hard work this summer.
Parents, as always, the entire administrative team, Tharyn Mulberry, Sarah Strassburger, and Martha Richards maintain an “Open Door” policy and would invite either students or parents (or both) to drop by and introduce yourselves. We look forward to seeing you!
I can be contacted anytime at 970-925-3760 ext.1134
Advantages to the Floating Bell Schedule
Consistent class length and time of day for classes/access/lunch (and planning periods)
An access period on Thursday
A designated period for meetings/assemblies-which means no alternate schedules
60-minute classes fall within our “sweet spot” for class length for all content areas
Still works with AVSC athletes.
