#2. Now that you have completed all the practice and assignments for Module 8, you will use your knowledge and understanding of Thinking, Language, and Intelligence to complete the Honors Summative. You are able to use notes or other resources but it must be your original work. The NCVPS policy on Academic Integrity is to be maintained.
TEACHER TALK 1
In order to successfully answer the short response question on the Module 8 Post-assessment you need to be VERY familiar with heuristic. For many it is difficult to differentiate between the different types of heuristics, i.e. availability, representative, and anchoring. Remember the basics, heuristics are mental shortcuts. They can help us make quicker decisions or negatively skew the decision making process. Also make sure you can explain both Gardner's and Sternberg's theories of multiple intelligences.
TEACHER TALK 2
In today's Honors Summative on Thinking, Language and Intelligence, you will consider specific terms and concepts from this module to explain YOUR past experiences.
To help you distinguish between each learn theory I put an example of how I use each theory in my life.
Trial and Error
I love painting and frequently change the colors of the wall in my home. Usually I settle on 3 to 4 colors, buy samples of those colors, and paint sections of a wall in the room I am working in. See the samples on my wall helps me determine which color to choose.
Algorithms
I do not have a GPS in my car so when I travel to a location I have never been to before I always get my directions from Google Maps. Google Maps always provides step-by-step instructions to help you get to your destination.
Heuristics
After a rash of break-ins in the neighborhood next to mine I panicked and installed a security system. Even though the break-ins happened during the day in homes that were empty (my wife is home) I was still afraid my house was going to get broken into.
Insight
It's an A-ha moment, also know as an epiphany. A sudden understanding of how to solve a problem.
Confirmation Bias
My father has very strong political views. He often blindly supports/advocates for candidates based on their party affiliation rather than making an informed decision based on the candidate's voting record, political views, or affiliations.
Fixation
My wife has a subscription to the magazine Real Simple. In every issue they have a section called New Uses for Old Things. It is usually hard to wrap my mind around some of their suggestions, like using a toothbrush to get the silk off of corn! I could never have imagined using a toothbrush for anything other than brushing teeth.
Use the following links to help you review these terms from the module.
