THINK, CREATE, SHARE, GROW
Journey to the Moon
District Teacher Librarians and third-grade teachers at James Madison Elementary School took students on a journey to the moon as they planned and co-taught a science unit based on Utah Core Standards for third-grade science. For three weeks, students gathered information about the moon using physical and online resources, and demonstrated their new knowledge through art, poetry, song, and a travel brochure. Travel where? To the moon, of course. Student projects will be featured at James Madison’s third-grade literacy night on October 3 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Collaboration for 21st-Century Learners
District Teacher Librarians recently spent an afternoon in professional development with Dr. David Loertscher, Professor of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. Dr. Loertscher highlighted the importance of collaboration between teacher librarians and classroom teachers to meet the informational and technological needs of today’s students. The professional development focused on collaborative techniques and the importance of Google Apps for Education for engaging students to share and create new knowledge.
Library Spotlight
Hillcrest Elementary School’s library clerks Gloria Richards and Brooke Beckstead have been busy creating an inviting library space with easy access to books. With the help of District Teacher Librarians, they moved shelves, weeded books, and updated the library’s decorations to create a student-friendly environment that celebrates reading using the theme Soar High Hillcrest Hawks.
