March 4
Student Conferences
Parents will be able to start scheduling conferences with teachers on March 7. Parent-teacher conferences are an excellent opportunity to find out how your child is doing this school year and to get to know his or her teachers. To help get the most out of the conference, take a few minutes to ask your child if there is anything that he/she would like to discuss with the teacher. Jot down everything that you want to talk about before the conference, and bring your notes with you. Ask questions if you don't understand something. Sometimes teachers get zipping along and use a lot of educational jargon, so don't be afraid to ask for clarification. Finally, take notes about what has been discussed. Share them with your child. Nothing is more powerful in improving student academics (or behavior) than a united front between school and home. Here are a few questions you may want to consider asking:
- Is my child performing at grade level?
- Does my child have strengths and/or weaknesses in major subject areas?
- How are my child's work habits and attitude?
- What kind of information is used to evaluate my child?
- How will you keep me informed about my child's progress or problems?
- What can I do at home to support what is happening in the classroom?
Thank you for sharing your beautiful children with us. All of us at Prairie take the responsibility of teaching our students very seriously. Our staff demonstrates their care and concern for students' academic and emotional growth every day. We love your kids and delight in their success almost as much as you do!
Sincerely,
Deb McLaren

Iditaread
The Iditarod is a very tough and exciting Alaskan sled dog race run each year from Anchorage to Nome. This challenging race of over 1,049 miles can take anywhere from 9 to 14 days to complete and is unlike any other event in the world. Prairie is going to follow the 50th Annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race this year, and our challenge is all about reading. We call it the Iditaread Challenge. Classes will read their way through all the race checkpoints from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. Each student's goal will be to participate in the reading activities to pass through 24 checkpoints. Students will keep track of their checkpoints on special Iditaread bookmarks.
Our reading "race" will begin on Monday, March 7, and will continue until Friday, April 1st. Here are some guidelines:
1. Everyone will be participating
2. Help your student choose reading material that is challenging but enjoyable.
3. All students will keep a record of their reading on their reading log.
4. Find out more about Alaska, the Iditarod, Jan Steves, and other mushers - http://www.iditarod.com or http://www.jansteves.com
5. All finishers will receive dog tags designed just for this event. Students must turn in their completed Iditaread bookmarks by Thursday, March 21st to qualify for a dog tag.
Good Luck with the Iditaread Challenge!
