Ready to communicate!
Message from the Principal
It's been amazing to walk our halls and see your children learning and practicing the Hawthorne Way again. As we begin our journey as an AVID school, getting to know your children as learners, and who they believe they are as learners, will be key to our success. This knowledge and understanding of our scholars, allows teachers to better plan for, motivate and encourage each child.
This year, our school-wide goal includes a focus on increasing student proficiency and achievement in literacy. Math continues to be at the forefront of our teaching as well, however, literacy is our district-wide focus this year. Creating goals and monitoring our progress is essential as we prepare each scholar to be college and community ready.
Please help us by ensuring your child is reading every night! 30 minutes a night can make a huge difference in your child's achievement here at school. Please note, this can mean the child reading independently, reading to you, a sibling or a family member; everyone counts! Make it part of your home routine and enjoy your reading time together!
As always, thank you for taking the time in reading our newsletter to stay informed of Hawthorne happenings.

Practicing Lock Down Drill
The intent of this is message is to inform Hawthorne families of an upcoming Lock-Down Drill that we will be conducting on Friday, September 24, at 2:30-3:30pm. The safety of your children, our staff, and visitors to our campus is an ongoing priority that we continually assess, evaluate, and refine. Changes in our society over the past several years have made new safety policies and procedures necessary.
Preparing for and practicing Intruder Drills are as necessary as the fire and weather drills we currently practice. When practicing this drill scholars will be sitting in close proximity to other scholars for the duration of the safety drill. Also, during this time no one will be able to leave or enter our building as we practice these drills as if the situation is actually happening. Please plan all student pick-ups before or after this time.
We have worked with our staff and students in preparing for this safety drill. Upon completion of the drill, we will debrief with building administrators and our School Resource Officer. Suggestions and revisions to our plan will be made, enabling our school to best respond to such an event.
Please be assured that safety is a top priority and part of the high level of education we strive to provide at Hawthorne Elementary. Thank you for your support in discussing these matters with your children. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office.
