A Message from Ms. Colon
Dear Mary Williams' Families
December is here! The students have been working really hard. In order for their success to continue, it will be important for them to stay engaged in learning during the upcoming break. Please continue to read and use your IXL account. Take a book or download the IXL app for those long trips.
I would like to take a moment to thank our PTO for an amazing Carnival/Craft Fair. This event could have not been possible without them. We are very fortunate to have a committed group of parents who are willing to do whatever it takes to support our students.
As the holiday season approaches, I want to wish you all a great break. Enjoy the time off with your family and loved ones. I will be reading some of my favorite titles and preparing to come to the best place students can learn at; Mary Williams Elementary.
Honored to be your leader,
Mrs. Colon
Birthday Policies Reminder
As part of the Virginia Healthy Initiatives, sweet treats for birthdays are discouraged. Children love to get pencils, erasers, and stickers, which are a much healthier option over cupcakes. If you do choose to bring your child’s class a birthday treat, we ask that it be peanut and tree nut free, sealed, and store bought with an ingredient label. All items must be checked in at the office and be served during lunch. Please contact your child’s teacher or the school nurse if you have any questions.
Car Line Rules
We are our students' role models. We ask that you show our students how to meet expectations by abiding traffic rules. This includes: following kiss and ride procedures for the school, parking in the appropriate parking spaces, following speed limits, and being kind to each other. We want our school to be a safe and kind environment for our students. Violators will be addressed.

Treats in the classroom
Please make sure you check with our nurse before sending treats to the school. We have several classrooms with students with allergies. In an effort to protect them from getting ill, we ask that treats are store bought, peanut free, and have a label with ingredients. Feel free to call to the school for additional information.
Watch D.O.G.S.
Don't miss the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a our students. We have over 40 dads already sign up for this amazing program. All it takes is one day patrolling the hallways, doing life with our students and encouraging them to the best they can be. The magic is in building relationships! Use the link below to register. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Maxfield at maxfieke@pwcs.edu

Box Tops
Cut out the coupons and ask your child to give them to their teacher. The more coupons you send in, the more money our school receives!

What are you reading?
This year our school has a focus on the lives of our students and teachers as readers. Our reading department has been leading professional development focused on this initiative. Staff members have signs outside their doors sharing what they are reading with others.
I love books! I have more books than I can read! But most of all, I love when students want to share their reading journey with me. Readers are leaders!
As a school we want you to share with us how books are part of your families. What are you reading? When and Where do you read? We can learn so much from each other.
I recently finished the book "GRIT" by Angela Duckworth. She explains how drive and passion can be more powerful than talent. Those who work hard and are focused can go further in life.
Do you want to know more about the books your student is reading in class? Contact your teacher or school librarian. Let's grow as a community of readers!
