Midway Mustang Memo
November 2018
Dear Midway Families,
It is hard to believe we have completed the first quarter of the school year! Our students are taking ownership of their learning by sharing the progress towards their personal goals during conferences. These conferences are the second part of our Academic Student Led Teams. Families and teachers are amazed at the academic progress and the speaking and listening skills displayed by our learners. This experience allows our students the opportunity to demonstrate self-awareness and self-management. Research shows that students who participate in evidenced-based Social Emotional Learning, such as Leader in Me, show an 11 percentile point gain in academic achievement.
We celebrated Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind during our ELM (Extraordinary Leadership Model) Award Ceremony on October 11th. During the month of September, Midway students practiced this Habit that focuses on helping students set goals, develop a plan, and work on the action steps required to achieve these goals. We look forward to honoring our students who exhibit characteristics of Habit 3: Put First Things First on November 15th.
Fall Festival was great fun! Our wonderful Parent Teacher Organization and many volunteers made this day special. Thank you to all who helped and participated! Our Book Fair was also a huge success. We want to thank Mr. Orr for coordinating the event, and all of our families for attending our Book Fair. Your support benefits Midway’s Media Center; the funds raised will positively impact our students as they will be used to purchase instructional resources.
The Forsyth County Schools iRun was held on October 6th. Midway had several families and staff members participate this year. BRAVO! Thank you to our teachers and family members who walked or ran this 5K event. A fun time was had by all. The funds raised will help provide internet service and devices for students in need throughout the district.
We have some exciting upcoming events in November! Please join us at 3:00 on Sunday, November 4th, for the Gladiator’s Game at the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth. Our Chorus will be singing—thank you for supporting our singers! https://www.fevo.com/edp/Midway-Elementary-Chorus-Fundraiser--Atlanta-Gladiators-vs-Norfolk-Admirals-CUuXZa1T
On Monday, November 5th, at 6:30, we will be continuing our Denmark Community Parent Series with Part 2. The topic is “Starting With the End in Mind.” We will discuss the transitions from elementary to middle school and from middle school to high school.
Also, Monday, November 12th, is Veterans Day. We are honoring our veterans with a celebration and refreshments from 8:45-9:30 a.m. If you or a family member are serving or have served in a branch of the military, please join us as we express our gratitude.

Red Ribbon Week was a great success. Students had fun dressing up to support being drug free. We raised $262. We are currently teaching Think First & Stay Safe lessons to our Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes. You will hear students call it Body Safety. We emphasize telling a trusted adult if someone tries to hurt your heart or your body. Next month we will conduct these lessons with our ACA classes and 3rd through 5th grades. A letter was sent home discussing the program further with all Kindergarten through 2nd grade students late September. Our other classes will receive this letter next week.

News from the Nurse
Cooler weather has many students coming to the clinic with runny/stuffy noses, red throats, and coughs. Please remember to keep your children home if they have any of the following symptoms: fever (before giving fever reducing medicine), nausea/vomiting, uncontrollable cough/sneezes, and diarrhea. If your child is absent due to any contagious illness please contact the clinic.
As always, we encourage a spare set of clothing for children in ALL grades. As the weather gets cooler, remember to switch out clothes to be appropriate for the season.
Please remember that children cannot carry ANY medications to or from school. parents must bring medication to the clinic and fill out a form giving us permission to administer. This includes things like cough drops and nasal spray too!! The clinic would be glad to keep any medications that will alleviate nuisance symptoms and allow the child to remain in the classroom comfortably. Please contact me if you have any questions about our medication policy.
Unsure if you have the cold or flu? What the guidelines are for medication in school? What happens if your child has lice? Visit Midway Elementary's home page, under student services click on school nurse for answers.

From the Midway Café
October was amazing! We celebrated National School Lunch Week October 15th – 19th. Our theme was “School Lunch – Lots to Love”, and we shared the love with our students. Each day all students that purchased a lunch in the café were entered into a drawing for a gift card. Just our way of saying thanks for having lunch with us! Several friends also shared their favorite things about school lunch on the morning announcements with me, and we had many that did some coloring sheets for us that we hung up on our “refrigerator”. So much fun!!
Mr. Dillon and his science classes harvested some radishes and greens from our school garden. They were awesome! We are grateful for him and all he does for us. The students love watching things they’ve planted grow and then reaping the harvest.
We also celebrated Red Ribbon Week. Our theme was “Life is Your Journey. Travel Drug Free”. We all wore red, served up red menu items and many other fun things throughout the week. Thanks to our wonderful counselors for organizing everything for us.
Our harvests of the month were apples, butternut squash and cabbage. We learned some nutritional facts about them and why they’re good for our bodies. We served yummy roasted cabbage & coleslaw and apples in various ways, both fresh and cooked. This is peak harvest for apples and remember, “an apple a day, helps keep the doctor away”.
November’s Harvests of the Month are citrus and sweet potatoes. We’ll also celebrate our veterans and have our annual Mickey Mouse Birthday Party this month. Lots to look forward to and be thankful for in this Thanksgiving season.
As always, we’re blessed to be here with your children each day. They make our job so enjoyable. Visit when you can and please contact me if I can be of any assistance.
Happy Harvesting and Thanksgiving!

General Reminders
We already have a large collection of items in the lost and found. Please write your child's name inside their jackets, sweaters, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc!
Please remember that the school day begins at 8:20. Children should be in their classrooms when the bell rings. If your child is a car rider in the morning, please make arrangements to leave your house in a timely manner that will allow your child to be in their classroom when the bell rings.
