District Parent Virtual Presentation - "Isolation: The New Drug of Choice"

According to Dr. Caroline Fenkel, LCSW, “Parents frequently tell us that they have to beg their teens to get out of the house and see their friends.” Add to this challenge the consequences of living through a pandemic.

Dr. Fenkel will talk with parents about how we can encourage young people to stop isolating while navigating the challenges of public health restrictions as a result of COVID-19.

With the ever-increasing dependence on laptops, smart phones, social media and online gaming, especially during these past 18 months, it’s no wonder teens and young adults prefer to stay in their rooms during their free time rather than connect with their peers IRL (in real life).

This presentation will address the causes of chronic isolation, the effects of living through a pandemic, and will guide parents in ways they can help their teens to break the isolation cycle.

There will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions.

The Zoom link for this presentation will be posted on the district website and sent out by Connect Ed on Thursday, 10/14/21 at 4 pm.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Students in grades 7 and 8 Art classes looked at the process of Amate Bark painting, a Mexican Folk Art tradition that was developed in the state of Puebla. The process involves creating paper from tree bark and then using bright colors to depict scenes of everyday life, history & nature. We added paper flowers & papel picado garland, which are often used to decorate for weddings, parties, quinceañeras and Day of the Dead Celebrations in Mexican culture. Artwork below is by: Adele Streletsky (bird) and Lola Monroy (house).

Graphic Design Students Recognize 9-11

Students in Ms. Shields' Graphic Design classes made a collaborative art project to recognize the events of 9-11.

Each color prompted students with a question:

: What is a hero?

: What are you grateful for?

: What is an act of kindness you will do this week?

: Why is it important to remember 9/11?
