Summit SPARKS News
OCTOBER 2019
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Summit Road STEM Elementary School Community,
It’s hard to believe it's October already and we are nearing the end of the first Quarter. During the first part of the school year students have worked hard at learning classroom and school routines. In the classrooms, students are working at building caring communities where they can support one another in their learning. To build a positive school environment, students have also learned about the behavior expectations for many of our common areas. In the hallways, students move quickly and quietly between locations. They are becoming more aware everyday of how their voices carry in our building and how important it is for them to be respectful of others who are learning.
Teachers have been busy learning and implementing our new Fountas and Pinnell Classroom curriculum during our Literacy Block. Students have been participating in rich, engaging lesson that will lead to deeper learning during their reading and writing time. It is great to see teachers collaborating and working together to provide the best possible learning experiences for our students.
As we move forward through the remainder of the year students will continue to build their understanding of what it means to be good readers and writers and to SPARK (Safe, Patient, Attentive, Responsible, Kind) at Summit. We are so proud of our students and the positive growth they have made in one short month. Our SPARK focus for October will be around promoting a "Growth Mindset".
Spirit Week is the week of October 7-10, 2019.
The days are as follows:
- Monday the 7th– Spirit Day - Show your Reynoldsburg Pride
- Tuesday the 8th– Typical Tuesday (Dress as your favorite movie character or real life hero)
- Wednesday the 9th– Wacky Wednesday (Dress in PJs and we will promote a "read in" day across the district)
- Thursday the 10th – Throwback Thursday (Summit Homecoming Parade Theme – Mario/Donkey Kong for the Parade or your favorite 90s attire!!!)

National Unity Day
As part of National Bully Prevention Month, National UNITY DAY is October 23, 2019. Wear ORANGE to show that we are together against bullying and UNITED for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion!
This year Summit with have our Fall Festival on November 1st. Our school will be participating in a statewide design challenge later in the year in which students will investigate the future of Smart Mobility. In anticipation of this challenge, this year's Fall Festival will revolve around transportation of the past, present and futures. Students will be asked to create a costume OR an artifact that represents transportation that is from the past, present or future. Students will do some imagining and planning at school but will create their costume or artifact at home. More details to come! Teachers will also be sending home more information about the Fall Festival that will now occur on November 1, 2019.
Sincerely,
Latasha Turner
Together we SPARK!
Growth Mindset at Summit
As parents and educators, we want to see all children be successful. One way to help students achieve their biggest goals is to help them foster a Growth Mindset. We will be working on how to have a growth mindset and learning more about the "Power of Yet".
