Dear Cubs,


We are slowly starting to welcome our volunteers back on campus. Through our PTO, we have had several parents sign up and start assisting on our campus in a variety of ways. We are so thankful for our parents!


This Thursday, September 30, we will host our Watch DOGS orientation at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Our Watch DOGS are dads, granddads, and father figures who sign up to spend a day on campus with our students. In the past, the volunteer may have a schedule that looks something like this:


  • 7:00 - Greet students at the door.

  • 7:30 - Star on KCUB morning announcements.

  • 7:45 - Monitor the hallways and complete a safety check.

  • 8:00 - Read to a classroom.

  • 8:30 - Assist in his child’s classroom

  • 9:30 - Attend and assist in a rotation classroom.

  • 10:30 - Monitor campus and assist custodians.

  • 11:00 - Lunch duty.

  • 12:00 - Lunch

  • 1:00 - Assist in his child’s classroom.

  • 2:30 - Help prepare for dismissal


Traditionally, our Watch DOGS attend an orientation with pizza and dessert. This year, in an effort to help us maintain a healthy campus and healthy families, we will only be serving pre-packaged cookies and drinks during the orientation. Additionally, volunteers will not be required to attend the orientation in order to volunteer. Although we hope all Watch DOGs can attend Thursday night to receive volunteer information, volunteers may begin signing up on October 1 regardless if they attended Thursday’s meeting. Please note that all Watch DOGs must complete the required district background check prior to volunteering on campus.


So how do you sign up to be a Watch DOG? Next Friday, October 1, we will have a link to the Sign-Up Genius in our newsletter. Look for it there. Of course, if you need more information you may call the school at 830-357-4400.

Frequently Asked Attendance Questions

Below are some frequent questions we receive in the front office regarding attendance. We hope that these FAQs help you when your child is absent from school. Should you have specific questions regarding your child's attendance, please feel free to contact our attendance secretary Melanie Bostic in the front office at 830-357-4400.


My child is sick and needs to stay home. What do I need to do?

If your child is sick, please keep them home so that they can rest and recover. As a reminder, your child must be fever and sick free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. You are welcome to call the front office to let us know your child is sick for the day, but we encourage you to email the teacher as well that morning. We are required to have a written note (email, handwritten parent note or doctor note) for the absence to be excused.


Why am I receiving an unexcused absence notice for my child?

Skyward generates an automated email to parents as soon as the teacher submits attendance for the day and marks a student absent. This email states that your child appears to have an unexcused absence for the day. Upon receiving a written note from the parent, our attendance secretary will update your child’s absence to excused. Please note that it may take several days for attendance to be updated.


What types of absences are excused?

The following absences are considered excused: illness, family emergency, death in family, sponsored 4H activities, doctor/dentist appointments, counseling appointments and attending a parent’s military deployment day.


Absences for family vacations and travel are unexcused absences. Absence notes with no details regarding the absence will also be marked unexcused.


My child is late for school. Do I need to walk them inside?

Yes. The tardy bell rings at 7:35 a.m. If you are dropping them off at school after that time, please walk your child inside and sign them in at the visitor kiosk so that they can get a tardy slip printed.


I need to check my child out early. What do I do?

Please come inside to the front office window to sign your child out early at the visitor kiosk. You must bring your driver’s license. Students can only be checked out early by an authorized parent/guardian or emergency contact listed in Skyward. We WILL NOT release a student to an adult not listed as an authorized pick-up person in the student’s Skyward account.

Remote Conferencing Information

If your child is quarantined, they are required to participate in the BISD Remote Conferencing program through Google Meet. This service provides instructional support to your child with their current classroom assignments. Remote Conferencing is not the same as virtual learning, nor is it similar to BISD E-Learning option from the 20-21 school year.


During remote conferencing, your student's classroom teacher will not be instructing students through synchronous (live) instruction, rather assignments will be posted to their district Learning Management System (LMS) for students to complete during their remote learning schedule.

CCES Book Fair

Our school is hosting a Follett Book Fair! Supporting a love for reading is critical to student success. Books provide an opportunity for students to see themselves reflected in stories, and they help build confidence and empathy. The Follett Book Fair encourages your child’s reading habits, builds their personal libraries, and raises funds for our school library.


Our Follett Book Fair will begin September 27th and end October 1st. September 27th will be Preview Day (no sales), and students will be able to visit the fair to browse and create wish lists. Sales will begin on Tuesday, September 28th. Here is the full schedule:


  • Monday – Preview Day
  • Tuesday – 7:25 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
  • Wednesday – 7:25 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. (Family Night)
  • Thursday – 7:25 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
  • Friday – 7:25 a.m. -12:00 p.m.


In addition to the in-person fair, we will also be hosting an online companion fair (code Z2YLD). Books purchased will ship free to the school one to two weeks after the fair concludes. The online companion fair is already live, so please feel free to visit https://efairs.follettbookfairs.com to begin shopping online anytime.

September Spirit Night at Dog & Pony Grill

Our September CCES Spirit Night will take place at Dog & Pony Grill on Tuesday, September 28 from 5 - 8 p.m. Come out and join your fellow Cub families for good food and fun with friends. A portion of the sales go directly back to our school. We hope to see you all there!

Watch D.O.G.S. Kick-Off Night

Our Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) Kick-Off Night has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 30th at 5:30 p.m. in our cafeteria. Who are Watch DOGS? They are dads, grandfathers, uncles, step-fathers, and other father-figures in a student's life that volunteer one day of the school year to help out around campus. We are excited to have this program back on campus this year.


Our kick-off night will introduce the program and provide information about volunteer expectations and duties. We will have individually wrapped cookies as a treat for our dads. All volunteers MUST complete a background check prior to their volunteer date. The online application is located at www.boerneisd.net/volunteers.


A sign-up genius for volunteer days will be available Friday, October 1.

Important Information from our School Nurse

Here are a few helpful facts from the nurse’s office:


  • Please keep your phone close to you, in case the nurse is trying to notify you. If you see this number on your phone: 830.357.4409 - it’s the nurse. Save this number.


  • All medications must go through the nurse’s office and come directly from the parent, not from the student. For example: Do not send Tylenol, Tums, or any medication with your child. All medications must have a doctor's order and be in the original container and kept in the nurse’s office (even over the counter medications). For further information regarding health or medications you can refer to our handbook online: http://www.boerne-isd.net


  • Please keep a change of clothes in your child’s backpack in case of an accident (especially if your child is in Kindergarten or 1st Grade). Include: shirt, bottoms, underwear and socks. If your child comes home in clothes that are borrowed from the nurse’s office, please wash them and return them to the nurse.


  • If you update your child’s immunizations, please give the nurse a copy of the new immunizations. Please make sure your child’s immunizations are up to date.


  • If you change your phone number or address, please let the office know, that way we can reach you in case of an emergency.

Boerne ISD to Offer Free Meals for all Students in 2021-22

Boerne ISD has announced that during the 2021-22 school year healthy meals, both breakfast, and lunch, will be offered to all students at no cost.


Typically, a student’s household must meet income eligibility requirements to qualify for free or reduced-price meals. However, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued guidance that allows schools to offer meals to all students at no cost for the 2021-2022 school year.

How Social Skills Can Support Our Stress Levels

Social skills or our Great 8 skills can help ward off stress and loneliness in children. When kids are able to form and maintain relationships, they’re less likely to be lonely. Plus, kids feel less stressed if they have trusted companions they can go to for support when needed. Research tells us that stress and loneliness are linked to both poor mental and physical health outcomes, so building strong social skills can actually help support positive mental and physical well-being for kids.


Protect your brain from stress with these five easy tips:

  • Establish some control over your stress; remember to only focus on the things you can control, like YOUR EMOTIONS, and YOUR reactions.
  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Stay organized! Alleviate any extra stress by creating routines for yourself. Put your shoes in the closet and your backpack in the same place every day.
  • Get help if you need it. Remember asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
  • Change your attitude towards stress! Practice optimistic thinking! Things will improve.

Marquee Birthday Announcements

Don't forget to celebrate your student on their birthday with an announcement on our marquee! Please purchase your announcement at least two weeks prior to the birthday date. The child's first name only will run on the marquee the entire week of their birthday. All funds go to back to support our school!

Safety

  • Talk to your children about using the cross walks when walking home from school. Crossing the street diagonally can be dangerous.
  • Drivers should leave plenty of space near cross walks when parking so there is plenty of room for adults and children to see oncoming traffic.

  • Drop students off in the front driveway only. Do not drop them off on Herff Ranch and have them cross the parking lot.


Visitors

  • Visitors must check in at the front desk and obtain a visitors pass before volunteering or visiting with your student. Please present your drivers license to the front window and our front office staff will be happy to assist you.


Attendance
  • Our school day begins at 7:25 a.m. The tardy bell rings at 7:35 a.m. We look forward to seeing your student on time each day. If your child eats breakfast at school, please have them arrive in the cafeteria in plenty of time to eat and get to class before the tardy bell!


  • Dismissal is at 3:00 p.m.


  • Please have your child attend school all day, everyday, unless they are sick. Please schedule appointments for after school whenever possible! We appreciate your support making the full instruction day an important part of your family's schedule.
