News from Glen Crest Middle School: February 20, 2023
From the Principal
Happy President's Day! I hope you all enjoyed the extra day and beautiful February weather this weekend!
Please encourage your students to be prepared for any weather! We have certainly seen a lot of variability lately. We do go outside everyday unless is is too wet or the feels like temperature is ten degrees or lower.
Last week, the students took a practice state test for ELA. This week, they will take a practice math test. The kids have taken this seriously and done a great job. There are features embedded in these online tests that we practice so that when the real testing comes around in March, the kids know how to navigate the programs. We work hard to balance practice opportunities so as not to overwhelm the students, but also prepare them to do their best.
The District 89 Cultural Fair is returning, Thursday, April 13th!! This is a fun night to celebrate and learn about the diversity in our community. We would love your family to participate! Please fill out the flyer attached at the bottom of this newsletter by March 16th. All forms can be returned to the Glen Crest office.
We are more often seeing students using smartwatches, and cell phones inappropriately during class. Students have been receiving or sending messages from family members during the school day. These messages disrupt the learning environment for your child, their classmates, and the teacher. If you need to reach your child during the day, please contact the main office at (630) 469-5220.
Cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices must be kept out of sight in a backpack, purse, or locker during the school day. If a student violates these rules, the device will be confiscated and there may be disciplinary action.
Please have a conversation at home about the appropriate use of technology at school and why it is important that all students are able to focus on their learning.
More information is available on page 44 of the Student/Parent Handbook, CCSD 89 Board of Education Policy 7:192 – Student Use of Mobile Telecommunication Devices, and Board Regulation 7:192-R.
Concert Orchestra families (grades 7 & 8) have a few upcoming events:
Friday, February 24 - field trip to Glenbard South to rehearse. Students must be dropped off by 7am to Glenbard South (not Glen Crest!) Door #9. We will rehearse there for a few hours and then return to Glen Crest around 10:30am. Students need to use their home instruments for this field trip!
**If your child usually takes the early bus and will need a ride to Glenbard South Friday morning, please let us know and we will try to arrange alternate transportation**
Monday, February 27 - Concert with Glenbard South HS Orchestras. Concert starts at 7:30pm, all students have to be there by 7pm to tune and warm-up. Concert dress (black and white) is required.
The 7/8th grade Symphonic Band will perform Thursday night, 2/23, at the Glenbard South Winter Band Concert. Students should meet in the GSHS band room at 7:15pm with their instrument and music. The concert begins at 7:30pm and there is no charge for admission. Students should wear all black or black bottoms and a white dress shirt with black socks and black shoes for this performance. Please contact Mrs. Berry or Mr. Garbar with any questions.
Pep band will rehearse Friday, 2/24, after school and will perform before the girls' and boys' basketball games. Students should wear their blue Music Dept. t-shirt for this event.
The IGSMA solo & ensemble contest will take place on Saturday, 2/25, at Lake Park High School (East Campus) for those students who signed up. Please reference the email from Mrs. Berry for specific details.
