Seal of Biliteracy/Credit Through Testing
Registration for the fall session of Credit Through Testing (CTT) is now open! The testing window is open now through October 26. Students who register after October 26 will not be able to use the CTT as evidence for their Seal of Biliteracy.
Loudoun County Public Schools is pleased to offer our students the opportunity to earn the Virginia Department of Education's Seal of Biliteracy and language credit through testing. Students who are able to speak, understand, read, and write another language besides English may be eligible to earn the diploma seal of biliteracy and two high school credits in that language. Please see the JCHS Seal of Biliteracy website for more information.
One way to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy through LCPS is with our Credit Through Testing. Credit Through Testing is free to all Loudoun County Public School students and takes place in November. If you would like to participate in the fall Credit Through Testing window, please fill out the Google Form on the website. Job For A Day
The Loudoun School-Business Partnership will be sponsoring the Job-for-a-Day Program for high school juniors and seniors on Monday, November 5, 2018. There is a second date only for those students placed at Inova Loudoun Hospital: Wednesday, November 20, 2017. Students who participate in the program will spend one day with a business in the community that is involved in a career in which the student is interested.
The goals of this program are:
- Allow students to explore fields in which they have an interest or aptitude.
- Offer students exposure to career clusters about which they have not previously known.
- Strengthen students awareness of business, industry, and business enterprises within the community.
- Heighten students decision-making processes related to life skills and career choices.
- Provide students with hands-on experiences with people, places, and things not always available in the classroom or school environment.
- Help students learn about job/career opportunities within the local area.
There are a fixed number of placements available in each career choice, so apply early to secure a placement. You also must submit a copy of your resume. These forms are the all-important first impression that the placement committee and business partnership sponsor have of you. You will want to make a good first impression.
You are responsible for your own transportation. If this presents a major problem or if you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Jeter in the Career Center.
Apply for Job-For-A-Day: https://webinter.lcps.org/JobForADay/.
Students have 15 minutes to complete their registration in order to keep the job they want. Be sure to have your resume ready to upload.

LCPS Mental Health and Wellness Conference
Saturday, Oct 13, 2018, 08:00 AM
Briar Woods High School, Belmont Ridge Road, Ashburn, VA, USA
One out of every four teens suffers from mental illness. Cameron Gallagher was one such teen. A bright and talented young girl battling depression and anxiety, Cameron’s dream was to raise awareness and erase the stigma about the topic. At the tender age of 16, she suddenly passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Recognizing the dire need for solutions to support our students’ mental health and wellness, Gale - A Cengage Company, curated Cameron’s Collection with nearly 40 eBooks that provide targeted resources and guidance for students, teachers, and counselors – letting our students know that they are never, ever alone.
Please explore www.CKGfoundation.org to learn more about Cameron’s story- and how one teenager is helping to change the world. Gale is "Speaking UP" for our teens battling with Depression and Anxiety- and will be donating to the foundation for every collection implemented into our schools.

Over the summer, we conducted a survey on struggles that parents and students have; one of the highest results was stress. This month, Sources of Strength has decided to focus on how to manage or lower your stress. Below are tips that you can practice to help lower your stress and be the best version of yourself.
Just remember, “Keep your head up struggle is everywhere, how will you change it?”
Tips:
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine- caffeine and nicotine are stimulants, and alcohol is a depressant.
- Indulge in Physical Activities- This can help get rid of stress hormones, and restore your body to a calmer state.
- Try relaxation Techniques- Try to take at least 5 minutes out of your day to take time and relax. Whether this be breathing, or using an app such as “Head Space”. These techniques can help calm the mind and help you stay relaxed and less stressed.
- Talk to someone- it helps to release tension or stress to talk about how you feel. Talking to someone can help you relax after you identify the problem.
- Practice time management- getting everything done it a timely manner can help you relieve stress. Making a to-do list can help to stop rushing or forgetting about your work.
- Try to make a healthy diet- eating junk foods can make your stress levels go up. You should find a healthy meal or snack that you like.
- Aromatherapy- exposing your senses to essential oils can affect your hormone production, brain chemistry, and stress levels in a positive way. For stress the recommended scents are Jasmine essential oil, Ylang Ylang essential oil, and peppermint essential oil.
- Sleep is very important to not stressing ,your body needs that recovery. Even a short nap between your work can help. We all have assignments to do but your sleep can’t be sacrificed because of it.
- Sitting down for long periods of time on an assignment can stress you out so stand up loosen up stretch out.

The Society of Women Engineers at UVA
The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to apply to our High School Visitation program on Saturday, November 17th, 2018. The program gives young women a comprehensive look at the different engineering fields and UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers, panels, lab tours, and hands-on design activities. The program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering experience, but we particularly target those students who are not yet familiar with the field and may be interested in applying to engineering schools or pursuing a STEM career.
To apply, students should complete the HSV Fall 2018 Application which can be found on the UVA SWE Website (https://www.virginiaswe.org/hsv). This fall session particularly targets high school seniors, but sophomores and juniors can also apply. Students who have previously applied to HSV, are in the targeted grade level, and demonstrate a strong interest in engineering through their essay will receive priority acceptance and priority consideration for an overnight stay at UVA hosted by a SWE member.
The attached flier and information sheet provide more information about the event and instructions on how to apply online through our website.
The application must be completed online by 11:59 pm on Saturday, October 22nd, 2018.
We are trying to expand the event and reach as many students as possible this year, but we need your help to spread information about the UVA SWE High School Visitation Day. Counselors, please pass along the attached flyer and information packet to any STEM teachers in your school. Teachers, please give the flyer and attached information to any female students who may be interested in the program. HSV is a great way for students to learn about engineering while also meeting new people and enjoying the beautiful UVA Grounds during the fall.
Attached below are forms with more information about HSV and the application process.
Thank you so much for passing along the information about our event, and please feel free to contact Megan Mazzatenta (mtm2fa@virginia.edu) or Kiri Nicholson (kan7au@virginia.edu) in a separate email with any questions or concerns.

William & Mary Law School
The Center for Legal & Court Technology (CLCT) at William & Mary Law School is pleased to announce the 2019 law-related program for high school students.
This unique and innovative program consists of interactive and dynamic courses designed to stimulate students’ conceptual learning and problem solving skills. The courses cover a variety of topics ranging from the US legal system, contracts and torts, to legal issues arising from emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence. We recommend these courses to students who are keen to explore what studying law entails, but also for those who have a passion for government studies or are interested in business and technology.
The courses are taught by Professors Fred Lederer and Iria Giuffrida, members of the faculty at William & Mary Law School and respectively CLCT’s Director and Associate Director for Research. All classes are held at the William & Mary Law School in Williamsburg, VA, which offers an exceptional opportunity for high school students to experience life in a law school that is home to the most technologically advanced courtroom in the nation.
A full list of courses, including dates and prices, is available on CLCT’s website: www.legaltechcenter.net. Registration will begin on October 15, 2018.
