The Quill

A Note from Mr. Nieslanik
As we move into second semester I wanted to highlight a couple thoughts:
- We are starting a new grading period, thus this is a great time for a student to reengage academically, if they struggled first semester.
- Attendance directly impacts performance. Research proves that if a student misses class the chance of academic success and retaining the information is more difficult.
- The email to contact a staff member is first name_last name @ beaverton.k12.or.us
My work is about four to six months ahead of the actual school year. I am currently working on preparing for the 2018-19 school year, staffing, and academic programming shifts. If you are returning to SRHS, or joining us next year, you will notice some shifts in our focus next year:
- We are focusing our work on providing IB opportunities for all. We are working hard to not only focus on the IB Diploma students and classes, but the whole IB experience.
- Even though we are not an IB MYP school, we will be building additional connections across the freshman and sophomore year to bring the IB philosphy to all students. This in return will help the students be more successful in their IB and advanced classes.
- We are an IB Career-Program Diploma Candidate School. This means that we will be partnering the IB experience with career exploration.
- Our work around AVID will be focused on bringing solid learning and teaching strategies across the school to better support student achievement. All students will connect with AVID in deeper and richer ways.
- Our programs are now aligned to pathways of study. Students will have opportunities to complete a pathway of study in Engineering, Computer Science, Performing Arts, Health and Human Performance, Visual Arts, Business or a Career Academy Self-Designed pathway. Students will also have increased opportunities to access job shadows and internships.
- We will also grow our Dual Language program to a third year of Spanish Language Arts and align with IB Spanish so students will have a clear path to earn the Seal of Biliteracy.
We are continuing our work to better meet the needs of our students! If you have any questions, please ask!
Until next time,
David
2nd Semester Begins, Feb. 5
Student 2nd semester schedules are available for download on StudentVue/ParentVue.
Please be aware, during the first week of the semester, classes are continuing to be balanced and student schedules could be affected.
Students who have holes in their schedule, or are assigned an incorrect course level (I.e. Spanish 1 instead of Spanish 2), should go see their counselor during the empty period or incorrect class.
To petition a class CHANGE, students should complete theoOnline 2nd Semester Schedule Change Petition Form.
Counselors will contact the student when they are working on their request. Students must continue to attend the class they wish to change until their petition is processed. Unexcused absences accrued before a class is dropped will not be excused after the change.
Off Campus Peer Tutors
Forecasting 2018-19
SRHS students will receive their forecasting materials during Advisory classes on February 14 to bring home for review. Students and parents are encouraged to read through the Academic Program Planning Guide as new information has been added that correlates with a new, updated forecasting sheet. A parent signature is required on forecasting forms. Students should make a note on their forecasting sheet if they have applied to an Option School.
Later, under the supervision of a counselor, each SRHS student will enter their forecasting choices online using their Chromebooks.
Students will have an opportunity to review their choices later in the spring. Changes can be made during the period of review, but will not be made at the beginning of the year. If classes are full, or dropped due to lack of enrollment, students could be assigned one or more of their alternate choices. Please be thoughtful when making regular and alternate course selections.
MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Counselors will visit feeder schools during the day to distribute forecasting materials for students to bring home, and will return at a later date to collect them.

PTO News
FEBRUARY PTO MEETING
Please join us at our February meeting, 2/7 at 6:30 in the community room. Our SRO, Officer Mike Bewersdorf, will be speaking and answering questions about vaping and the marijuana laws.
Great news! We are up to 878 people in our volunteer system. However, we need volunteers to LOG THEIR HOURS!!
Just as your actual service provides many opportunities and activities that make SRHS fun and memorable for students and their families, it is yet another benefit of your generosity if you remember to record your hours. We report these hours to the district and use them when applying for grants to support our needs and demonstrate our community's buy in. Documented volunteer hours are very valuable!
When you volunteer at the school during the day please log in and out on the volunteer computer located on the long counter in the main office. If the computer is not working please ask the office staff for assistance.
If you are volunteering after hours or off campus you can record your hours from your phone or home computer. Simply log into your volunteer profile, click on the "hours" tab, choose "Southridge", hit select, enter date/hours, and save. Volunteers can enter hours in bulk....the most important thing it to enter them!!
A HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers for making Southridge a great place for our kids.
Boys Golf Team
Join us for a fun, no obligation practice @ Redtail driving range on Feb. 13! We will meet on the top tier (at the far end) @ 3:45. Meet Coach Julie Barr & get some help with your swing. If you have clubs, bring them and any golf team questions you may have. Range balls and food will be provided.
For more information email the coach at julie_barr@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Two Student Surveys
STUDENT SURVEY
The annual student survey for high school students will be conducted in Advisory by accessing a link in their Career Information System (CIS) account. The survey will be available in English and Spanish. Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify assistant principal, Lori Krumm.
WELLNESS SURVEY for juniors only
The Oregon Student Wellness Survey (SWS) assesses school climate and the behavioral health of Oregon youth in grades 6, 8, and 11. The SWS assesses factors that influence student success such as school climate, supportive parents and teachers, commitment to school, and positive youth development. It also examines risk factors like mental and emotional health, substance use, and gambling. In addition, the survey provides information about antisocial behaviors at school such as bullying, fighting, and truancy.
The SWS will take students 45 minutes or less to complete and will be administered electronically.
