Sheridan Newsletter 4.21.23
April 21, 2023
A Message from the Principal
Dear Sheridan families,
As much as we’d like to talk about something *other than* the weather, this week how could we NOT? Since Monday, we’ve worn winter coats, endured high winds, rain, hail, back to high 70’s, and now it feels like “spring” - a wild ride for sure! We are grateful to all of you for sending your children prepared and ready for Mother Nature’s mood swings. Is it a coincidence that we’re also celebrating Earth Day? To acknowledge the importance of the event, today our Shark Families listened to the book, "Dear Children of the Earth" by Schim Schimmel, which is a letter from Mother Earth to the children of the world asking for help, and then as family groups put together a letter to Earth explaining what we can do to help. Ask your child what they contributed to the conversation.
ACES Walk
On Wednesday, May 3rd at 10:00am, we will participate in the ACES walk! ACES stands for “All Children Exercise Simultaneously.” This is a school-wide event, and parents are invited to join us! Please see the MAP of the route we will take. We invite you to “jump in” when your child’s class begins their route on Spruce. We begin with 4th graders and go in descending age. (Early Childhood students will simply walk a loop on Spruce.) With our limited parking, please WALK here if you can, or park on Spruce east of Sheridan Road.
Exploration Day
Our APT parents are putting the final touches on the plan for Exploration Day, coming up on Friday, May 12 in the AFTERNOON. This is truly one of the most anticipated events of the year! Please see the APT section below if you would like to volunteer and help.
Upcoming Parent Talk from TrueNorth
Please join us in-person or virtually for our next D67 and D115 Parent Series on Transition Planning on Monday, May 15th at 12:00 pm. During our meeting, Amy Engstrom, Transition Specialist from TrueNorth will be available to answer any of your questions related to transition planning (employment, work experiences, education, independent living, and transition linkages). Please see the linked flier for more information and to RSVP for the event. A light lunch will be provided.
Spring MAP Testing
District 67 students in grades 2-8 will take the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) during April 24-May 11. MAP is a Common Core-aligned, adaptive, computer-based assessment. This nationally normed assessment is designed to measure growth over time in the areas of reading and math. The district utilizes the achievement and growth data from MAP to inform instructional planning for individuals and groups of students; and measure growth from year-to-year.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Susan

Electric-Powered Scooter Safety Tips
With the weather warming, there has been an increase in electric-powered scooters around Lake Forest. While e-scooters are a fun way to travel, they can be dangerous. The Lake Forest Police Department has a few reminders for parents, guardians, and students about how to ride an e-scooter safely:
- Wear a helmet.
- Test the brakes. Make sure you know how to use the brakes and how long it takes to stop the e-scooter so you’re prepared for an emergency stop.
- Alert others and be seen. E-scooters are small, quick, and silent, making it difficult for others to spot you, especially in parking lots and structures. Expect vehicles and pedestrians to not see you; slow down, and plan ahead of time.
- Follow traffic rules. Please stop at stop signs and watch for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
- Ride solo. Only one person per e-scooter; additional riders can increase the risk and severity of collisions.
Find more safety tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
