Capturing Kids' Hearts
Students are More Invested in a Class and Teach Others When They Play an Active Role....
Remember, when we do for others what they can and need to do for themselves, we stifle their confidence… or make them lazy.
Reflective Question:
Are your students empowered to help each other and you within the classroom environment?
Tips
- Create ownership! Use leadership roles for group work.
- Brainstorm tasks and roles that could be done by students.
- Utilize Classroom Ambassadors: Let them greet students at the door, help run errands, introduce new students, and explain the Social Contract to visitors.
- Employ a Teacher of the Day: Students who finish their work early are empowered to help other students just like a teacher would do. Those who teach, learn.
- Use Class Assistants: Students can create an absent student folder for their peers.
- Establish a Birthday Committee: compile a list of birthdays and celebrate them during “Good Things.”
- Empower two class raters for the Social Contract each day: For example: “Lauren, How do you think we did today listening to each other ? What could we have done better?”
- Begin to have students lead “Good Things.” Teach the younger kids how to ask relevant questions.
- Don’t forget to participate yourself as part of the class. Kids love to hear your "Good Things!"
Empowerment = Confidence. Thank you for building your students confidence!
