Pine River Elementary News
Egg-citing Times in Second Grade at Pine River!
Pine River Second Graders spent 21 days turning chicken eggs and monitoring incubators. Then, 29 chicks hatched and grew in the care of the students. Thank you to Mrs. Terri Williams and Mrs. Melissa Kenyon for providing this experience for the students and teaching them about life cycles. We would also like to give a shout out to the East China Technology Department for setting up the “Crittercam” and allowing students and families to view the eggs hatching and chickens at home during this egg-citing time.
Everything is Just Ducky in Mrs. VanderMeulen’s Classroom!
Kathy VanderMeulen’s class at Pine River had the opportunity to hatch ducks. They had 7 ducks hatch and enjoyed learning all about them. They compared the duck life cycle (28 days of incubation) to the chicken life cycle (21 days of incubation). They also looked at how different physical features (bills and webbed feet) are related to different habitats and different ways of life for the ducks as compared to the chickens. The students also had time to compare facts and opinions about the ducks. In their opinion, ducklings are much cuter than chicks! A BIG thank you goes to Vicki Ruemenapp of Ruemenapp's Polled Herefords Farm who donated the eggs and enriched the learning of the students.
Pine River Students Love the Pine River Nature Center!
Mrs. Kris Jensen’s and Mrs. Rosalyn Wise’s first grade classes visited the Pine River Nature Center on May 22nd. The first graders explored hands-on activities to learn about animal features. Students worked in small groups to listen, discuss, and test their knowledge about body coverings of various animal groups and the function of animal feet. Each student had the opportunity to create an animal footprint casting to take home. The students also explored the natural animal surroundings of the Nature Center while hiking several of their various trails.
Pine River Elementary Spring Concert
Pine River’s music teacher, Mrs. Gwyn Kubiak, showcased the students’ musical talents and skills in a Spring Concert on May 21st. The students’ growth and development in music were highlighted in a variety of fun and nostalgic songs that they sang for family and friends who filled all of the seats in the East China Performing Art Center. Thank you to Mrs. Kubiak, the Pine River staff, and PAC Manager David Simpson for assisting the Pioneers in their performance!
