Nurse Powell's Health Science Students Have Been Busy!
Nurse Powell teaches our pharmacology technician and patient care classes at Vanguard. Her students have been learning compounding and patient care.
She explained, "Compounding is used in pharmacies when a patient cannot take a drug in its current state (tablet) so it is crushed and mixed with different types of solutes to make a syrup or ointment etc. For class making ice cream the students learn measurements, the importance of following exact instructions, and calculations for converting regular household measurements milliliters. Plus they love the ice cream.
For patient care, we had just covered the appropriate PPE (mask, gown, gloves) to wear with certain diseases. They were given a scenario and told they had a patient in isolation that needed assistance with shaving. It was a fun way to review the diseases we had covered and the appropriate PPE to wear with those encounters. The shaving was used because with the shaving cream on their gloves they had to demonstrate to me the appropriate way to remove the gloves without contaminating themselves."
See the photos below of our students in action. We are lucky to have Nurse Powell on campus and we are so proud of our health science students and all their hard work!
