January 2020 - Dallas ISD Substitute Employee Newsletter
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
On behalf of Dallas ISD, the Substitute Office would like to wish all of our hard working substitutes a very happy and prosperous new year! We hope everyone enjoyed their break and rang in the New Year with friends and family. It is crazy to think that we are just five short months away from summer break! The spring semester is often times the most hectic of the two semesters with state testing looming around the corner and students anxious for summer break.
HIGHER PAY RATES FOR SUBSTITUTES IN DALLAS ISD EFFECTIVE JANUARY 2020!
We thank you for the hard work you put forth to be in the classroom for our students. To stay competitive in the market and provide the support needed for students and campuses, Dallas ISD has increased the per diem rates for substitute teachers.
The rates are effective January 3, 2020.
SPECIAL EDUCATION TRAINING
The Special Education Department of Dallas ISD is hosting a Special Education Training on Friday, January 24, 2020 to train substitutes in one of our most in-demand areas. Serving our students with disabilities is one of our most critical areas with high demand. We would love for you to join!

SUBSTITUTE CAMPUS COORDINATOR LIST
Each campus has a set person or people who work with the substitute population. It may be an office manager, an assistant principal, or a financial clerk. This coordinator is in charge of handling substitute assignments, classroom placements, and most importantly time sheets. On the substitute webpage there is a link to the substitute campus coordinator for each campus. Please refer to this list anytime you have questions regarding your assignment or payment for that specific campus. It is a common misconception that the substitute office handles payroll for substitutes. Each campus (typically the office manager) is in charge of submitting time sheets to payroll for all assignments worked on their campus. If you ever believe there is a discrepancy on your paycheck, please be sure to reach out to the specific campus you took your assignments at. Below is a link to the substitute webpage where you can find the Substitute Campus Coordinator Contact List.
SUBSTITUTE TIP OF THE MONTH
Serving Students with Special Needs: As we begin the second semester it’s always nice to revisit curriculum strategies and classroom management for students who are a part of our special populations.
As the school year progresses we find more substitutes in longer multi day assignments needing new ideas or a reminder of practices to utilize. I have attached a link which has free printable materials, articles, and ideas that can not only work for our special needs students but can also be adapted to our struggling learners. Please click on the following link: Special Needs and Classroom Management
ASSIGNMENT ACCEPTANCE REMINDER
Please be reminded that you must accept five assignments a month to remain an active substitute. Please log into Absence Management today to begin accepting assignments.
Please remember our students need you even more during the Spring semester.
SUBSTITUTE FEEDBACK ON CAMPUS EXPERIENCE
From your group efforts we've created substitute feedback questions based on your most commonly mentioned subjects, and we have included them below for your convenience.
- Was a clear lesson plan provided?
- Were you provided with appropriate resources to fulfill your job duties (contacts, emergency plan, keys, seating charts, school maps, etc.)?
- How well did you feel welcome and supported by campus staff?
- Did you have support for students with behavioral challenges?
- Would you be interested in returning to this school in the future?
