ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS
Reminder: Mesa Verde is planning to have our 6th grade students attend SDCOE's Camp Cuyamaca May 1- May 5. This is a very exciting opportunity for 6th grade students. We encourage all students to attend. #ForeverMemories!
In preparation, Mesa Verde will be hosting a speaker from SDCOE's Camp Cuyamaca to give a presentation to our 6th grade students. This presentation will take place in the Gym on Tuesday, January 24th. Parents are welcome to attend from 9:00-9:40 am. **Parents must sign in before going to the gym.
Please note: Attendance is NOT required for your child to attend camp. If you are not able to attend, there will be a posted video presentation on Mesa Verde's website afterwards as well as an FAQ. NEW! MVMS Spelling Bee is Here!
NEW! Book Club! Next book: Blended!
Summary: Eleven-year-old Isabella’s blended family is more divided than ever in this “timely but genuine” (Publishers Weekly) story about divorce and racial identity from the award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of Out of My Mind, Sharon M. Draper.
Eleven-year-old Isabella’s parents are divorced, so she has to switch lives every week: One week she’s "Isabella" with her dad, his girlfriend Anastasia, and her son Darren living in a fancy house where they are one of the only black families in the neighborhood. The next week she’s "Izzy" with her mom and her boyfriend John-Mark in a small, not-so-fancy house that she loves.
Because of this, Isabella has always felt pulled between two worlds. And now that her parents are divorced, it seems their fights are even worse, and they’re always about HER. Isabella feels completely stuck in the middle, split and divided between them more than ever. She is beginning to realize that being split between Mom and Dad involves more than switching houses, switching nicknames, switching backpacks: it’s also about switching identities. Her dad is black, her mom is white, and strangers are always commenting: “You’re so exotic!” “You look so unusual.” “But what are you really?” She knows what they’re really saying: “You don’t look like your parents.” “You’re different.” “What race are you really?” And when her parents, who both get engaged at the same time, get in their biggest fight ever, Isabella doesn’t just feel divided, she feels ripped in two. What does it mean to be half white or half black? To belong to half mom and half dad? And if you’re only seen as half of this and half of that, how can you ever feel whole?
It seems like nothing can bring Isabella’s family together again—until the worst thing happens. Isabella and Darren are stopped by the police. A cell phone is mistaken for a gun. And shots are fired.

Mesa Verde Career Fair
On Friday, March 3rd from 11:30-1:00 p.m. we are planning a Career Fair in our gymnasium. There are 16 career clusters to explore! With so many different career clusters and pathways within those clusters we want to broaden our students' horizons and open their minds to the many opportunities that abound.
Can we count on you? We are looking for parent volunteers and community members who represent the above mentioned career clusters both at the professional (4-year college degree or more) and the paraprofessional (apprenticeship, certificate, 2-year college degree) levels.
We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about their career and want to share that enthusiasm with middle schoolers! Students will want to know:
- Why did you choose this career?
- What training did you receive and where you went to college (if applicable)?
- If you could wave a magic want what is one thing you'd like to change about your career
- What is one thing you just love about your career?
*Students LOVE visuals, manipulatives and free stuff so bring your pens, pencils, frisbees, hats, water bottles, keychains, stickers, buttons, etc. Each student will receive a MVMS drawstring backpack at check-in.
READY TO VOLUNTEER? Please click here.

The difference between a Guest, a Visitor and a Volunteer as per the PUSD Board Policies.
1. A Visitor is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, attends a student performance, special event, festival, open house, back-to-school event, sports event, athletic competition, etc. A visitor may either be accompanied or unaccompanied by school district staff. Designated school district administrative personnel are to make this determination. A visitor is usually not required to sign a registry.
Example: Your school is being recognized for achievement and members of SDCOE are coming to watch students or your school is hosting a Jr. Olympic competition.
2. A Guest is defined as an individual who, with school district approval, assists students, schools, and teachers on a non-regular basis or who individually observes a classroom or activity. A guest may also assist with educational programs or with special events on an occasional or infrequent basis. A guest shall immediately report his or her presence at the school office or at the designated school location upon arrival at the school and sign a guest registry.
Example: Your school is hosting the book fair, a play where parents are coming to watch, or a teacher needs help in the classroom with a one- or two-day tie-dye t-shirt project for the jog-a-thon. A class is hosting a party or a fun run.
3. A Volunteer is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, voluntarily assists school districts, schools, educational programs, or students on a regular and ongoing basis. A volunteer is required to complete a Volunteer Application and have a Megan’s Law Background Check or a State and/or Federal Background Check completed.
Example: A parent is assisting with a weekly and ongoing project such as the running club or Lego league. A grandparent is helping in music or art classes weekly. A field trip chaperone and/or driver (usually requires Level 1 and 2 applications).
If someone is coming to help in the class only one or two times, they are not considered volunteers therefore do not need to fill out a Level 1 application.
