Some important information for this week....
Communication
I committed to you at the beginning of the year to do my very best to keep in touch as much as I can. I know that moving forward there may be some restrictions on when you are able to read or respond to written communication. Please know that I will continue to honour my commitment to you to keep in touch - but never expect (now or ever!) that you respond in the evening or on weekends. We've got this - and will continue to keep in touch as best we can :)
School Morale
Thanks so much to those who signed up for the Sign making workshop with Heather and our first annual Cookie Swap!
Your School Morale committee thought we'd look at a January "get together" date - December can be so busy. Stay tuned for more information.
Equity and Diversity Calendar
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee would like to invite schools to contribute to the 2020-2021 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Calendar by involving students in the creation of media that comments on issues related to equity. The theme for next year is: Embracing Diversity, Changing the World. All schools are welcome to submit a photo for the calendar. The artwork selected for publishing will be based on:
- Relevance and connection to the theme;
- Image quality (image must be 5 mega-pixel or higher), and
- Submitted by Friday, March 6th
Schools are encouraged to account for a variety of learning needs and styles by having students use diverse art forms to elaborate on the theme. Embracing Diversity, Changing the World is a theme that has great potential for engaging in conversations about the importance of allies, advocates and community in the wake of incidents of fear, intolerance and hatred.
Please let me know if you are interested in submitting an entry on behalf of Kawartha Heights.
School Council Money
A reminder that School Council has generously offered $250 per homeroom class for you to plan and implement an experience of your choice at the school. This might be Scientists in the School, an artist, Nature Nancy (if you don't know about this, come see me!), etc. Please let Deb, Barije or me know if you're booking with Council money so that we can report back to them on how it's being used.
Jungle Sport
Given some of our current uncertainties, we decided it would be best to postpone Jungle Sport at this time. We have rebooked for October - in the week following Thanksgiving. For this year, we will have lacrosse and curling school wide - as well as the $250 for each class to enjoy an experience of your choice (see above). Please let me know if you have any questions!
Recess Club
Recess Club is now up and running! If you have students that might benefit and did not get an initial letter of invitation, please let me know.
Technology
A quick update to let you know that 15 new Chromebooks have arrived! The library has started undergoing a transformation and the extra computer desks will be shipped out shortly. With any luck our new "learning commons" space and mixed technology cart will be available for sign out in the next few weeks. Thanks to all for your help and support as we redistribute and make great use of tech at our school!
Health and Safety
This week Kathy, John and I will be completing our quarterly Health and Safety Inspection. If you have any concerns or questions, please make sure you let us know.
Diversity Celebration
I was so excited to hear some of your thinking about a school-wide diversity celebration, honouring so many of the different backgrounds and cultures we have represented at Kawartha Heights! Stay tuned as we navigate how to pull this great idea together!
December Celebrations
See the attached Holy Days poster and information from Supt. Nigro about celebrations in December. Please consider how you might integrate some of this background information into your class learning over the next month.
Festive Fridays
This Friday is the first of our official Festive Fridays. Let's show some great school spirit and rock the FLANNEL this Friday!
School Improvement Plan
PA Day
Thank you to everyone for your collaboration and great thinking as we put our brains together on the PA day. I will type up and share the Learning Goals and Success Criteria at some point this weekend. I will also be sharing our SIP Pre-assessment levels and expected targets too. Stay tuned!
A reminder that the first Number Sense strand starts Monday. Let's go team - and don't forget those rods!
