Students of the Week:
Aly T. is our literacy student of the week! Aly jumped right in and followed rules and procedures from her first day with us. She has also been bold and shared out her thinking in literacy class. Awesome job, Aly!
Haylie C. is our Mathematician of the Week! Haylie has been working really hard this week as we have been reviewing adding and subtracting fractions. I have seen her confidence grow and I have seen an increase in her participation. Way to go, and keep it up!
Ornaments for our Neighborhood Christmas Tree
We have set up a Christmas Tree in our 5th grade Neighborhood. Students are welcome to bring in an ornament from home to hang on our tree. We ask that you NOT send any breakable ornaments or ornaments with strong sentimental value.
Math News:
This week we will continue working with fractions as we start Unit 7. In this new unit we will build to multiplying and dividing fractions. This week we will start with multiplying a whole number by a fraction and/or mixed number. We will utilize models and picture representations to help us show our fraction work.
Literacy News:
We are continuing to work on unit 4 in literacy where we are practicing our literacy skills and also learning about child labor in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Students are presenting their readers theater and completing a writing task related to the two texts we've read. Later this week we will take a break from unit 4 to spend some time learning about different text structures. Students will create a text structure magazine on a topic of their choice!
Science News (Cotey Homeroom Only):
This week in science we will use evidence from experiments to explore Earth's gravitational force. We will explain the cause and effect relationships between two factors (mass and distance falling) that affect gravity. All grades will come from active participation in classwork.
Key words to know: gravity, mass, distance, air resistance, force/motion.
Social Studies News (Ward Homeroom Only):
This week in social studies students are gathering knowledge from a variety of sources about the Reconstruction time period. At the end of the week students will work on a project to share their learning with others.
