Great Shakeout on Thursday, October 21st at 10:21am

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our highest priority. To provide schools an opportunity to practice emergency response procedures, our district will participate in the Great California Shake-out in a District-wide on October 21, 2021 at 10:21am. Please be advised that students will be dismissed at the regular time on this day.

The goals of the training drill are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries. They allow us to evaluate our emergency operations plan and improve our response skills. As part of the drill, the students and staff will participate in the activation of our school’s Safe School Plan.

In order to protect students, in case of an actual emergency students will only be released to the parents and/or other adults listed on the student’s Emergency Card. Please ensure that this card has updated and accurate information. It is a good idea to have several trusted adults listed on the card, including one or two who live within walking distance of school. You should assume that in an actual emergency, telephone communication may not be possible; therefore please discuss your family meeting place and reunification plans in advance with anyone listed on the student’s Emergency card.

In the event of an actual emergency any approved emergency contact person should do their best to bring identification and arrive at the Request Gate. While the student is located, the adult will be directed to the Reunion Gate to meet their child and sign them out. This procedure is designed for your child’s protection and for your peace of mind.

Prior to the drill, please discuss your family’s home preparedness plan with your student(s). The American Red Cross has materials in English or in Spanish from their website:

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month I would like to ask everyone to wear pink on Friday, October 22nd.

The way breast cancer has affected my life, I lost my aunt to breast cancer 2 weeks after my oldest daughter was born. My aunt was a special education teacher in LAUSD for students with severe disabilities until she got a chance to choreograph large stadium performances. She went on to choreograph the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in 1988, 1992 (the poster in my office is of the opening ceremonies), and 1996. She also choreographed halftime at the Super Bowl for 8 years before her passing. One of the cool projects she did was a commercial for British Airways, here is a link

I know many of us have either directly or indirectly been affected by this disease, and I would like to help bring awareness by wearing pink inside out Friday.

Thanks for your support!

Don’t Recycle Your Plastic Bottles Just Yet: Check-Out these Zero-Waste Refill Stations Around LA!

Don’t Recycle Your Plastic Bottles Just Yet: Check-Out these Zero-Waste Refill Stations Around LA!

Have you heard of these zero waste stores or refill stations? Zero-waste refill stations offer a place for you to fill up on bulk household and personal care items. Products vary from store to store but generally include things like dish soap, household cleaners, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, lotion, facial products and other personal care items.
You just need to bring an empty container from home, weigh it, fill it up with as much (or as little) product as you want, and bring it to the cash register to be weighed again. You only pay for what you take. It’s a way to reduce your personal plastic waste, reuse something existent, potentially save money, and show the larger stores and manufacturers that there’s a demand for zero-waste products and services.

The LA Times has listed a few shops in the LA area: please check them out and help spread the word to further green our lifestyle!

Sustain L.A. / Wild Terra / The Refill Station at Otherwild Goods & Services / No Tox Life / Without Waste Shop / The Refillery L.A. / Naked Frankie / Lola Danger / Ban SUP Refill / Refill Evolution / Strictly Sustainable Altadena / Riley’s General Store / The Waste Less Shop
