Overview

The 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was formed in March of 1863. It was infantry regiment that saw extensive service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. This regiment was one of the first all Black units during the civil war.

Significance

The 54th was an all colored volunteer Regiment that fought for the North was approved by the Governor of Massachusetts in March of 1863.
