Everyone Loves Maggie
Maggie lounges patiently at the feet of her owner, Dana Friedman-Graham, as Sprague students listen to a book she reads. Sometimes the spotted great dane pops her head up to listen to a sentence or two. Once the story is finished Maggie sits up tall and proud and students surround her giving a collective ‘Ooooohhh’ as they realize that Maggie is taller than most of the students who sit on their knees to greet the therapy dog.
The 3-year-old visits Sprague weekly through K-9 Reading Buddies, a local organization that brings dogs together with students to encourage reading as well as to help the younger students follow directions and learn how to give directions.
“Maggie gives our younger students a sense of independence and leadership when they hold her leash and walk her down the hallway,” said Mallory Donenberg, Early Childhood Teacher. “When Maggie visits we practice core words such as stop, go, fast, slow. We also focus on following directions and giving Maggie directions.”
Maggie, and other K-9 Reading Buddies, have been an integral part of the early childhood program at Sprague for the past five years. Other classroom teachers have picked up on the benefit of students reading to pets and have invited Maggie into their classroom.
