District Staff News
February 11, 2019
I'm glad we all survived last week's great snowstorm! The decision whether to close or delay schools is never an easy one. Last week, we certainly saw how vastly different the weather can be from one side of town to the next. Here's hoping that the rest of the winter is just rainy and mild so we can have as much time in the classroom as possible!
Like you, I am interested in seeing whether our state legislature steps up and funds our schools in a way that will make a difference. While there is lots of talk, I'm hoping that this legislative session will see some real action. There have been dozens of bills introduced with hearings nearly every day. Lawmakers are hearing testimony on student safety, proposals to implement trauma-informed practices in all schools, and PERS reform. As you know, the Governor's proposed budget includes lowering class sizes, increasing pre-k services, fully funding Measure 98, and making the school year longer.
There are many calls on the public to get involved in legislative lobbying for education. OSBA is hosting a series of Lobby Days to connect school board members, parents and educators from each district with their respective legislators to advocate for sufficient, stable funding for Oregon education. In addition, OEA has organized a "March for Our Students" on Monday, February 18 to call for adequate funding for education.
Finally, the Chair of the State Board of Education just wrote an opinion piece after witnessing harassment and intimidation at a school-sanctioned event. Find out what he's asking all of us to do to create more positive environments for our kids.
Thank you for everything you do to support our students. Creating safe, welcoming, inclusive educational environments is a crucial task for us to ensure all of our students succeed.
Best,

Once again, the Charbonneau Art Association has paid it forward to the Canby High School art program.
Through its annual fundraiser, Art with Flair, the Charbonneau Art Association was able to donate $4,000 to the CHS art program during an awards reception Jan. 13 at Charbonneau Country Club.
Canby High School serves more than 600 students in art education classes. With donations from the CAA, the Canby art program has funded scholarships, field trips and purchased equipment that is not possible without this annual art festival fundraiser.
"None of these activities and large equipment purchases would be possible without the donations over the years from Charbonneau Art Association," said teacher Jennifer Dorsey. "Recently, a portion of the donation has gone into our CHS Visual Arts Scholarship for a graduating CHS student who is majoring in visual arts in college."
Former president Jenni Kadwell, a Canby High graduate, established the Charbonneau Art Association as a nonprofit in 2015.
"Giving back to my community has been, and continues to be, a blessing," said Kadwell. "Being able to interact with the students, offering an opportunity for them to showcase their work in a student gallery while interacting with other artists in our community is inspiring. Additionally, providing an event that lets the students demonstrate their skills means the world to me and those in our art association."
The 2019 Charbonneau Art Festival will be held Nov. 1-3. For more information, check the website at www.charbonneauarts.org.

You may have missed it during the Super Bowl, but Google had a great commercial about some of the most important words spoken across the world.
