Red Ribbon Week
Next week at Lafayette, we will recognize Red Ribbon Week and choosing to be kind to our minds and living drug free. This year's theme is be kind to your mind which fits perfectly into all of the SEL work we are doing with the students. Take a look at the messages we will share with the students throughout the week on LAF Live.
Take care of your inner peace
- Your peace is something you can control, that means how you let things affect you. When a duck gets wet, the water slides off of their back. When a sponge gets wet, it soaks it all in. You have a choice today to either be a duck or a sponge with the things around you. You can either soak it all in and feel like you are going to sink or you can let it slide off your back and keep going.
- Did you ever wake up late and rush through breakfast, and walk to school in the rain only to get to school and realize that you forgot your instrument. Not to mention that you also have a math test today. It feels like the worst day ever. It might have been a rough morning, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be a terrible day/week/year. When we shift our perspective, it helps us to remember that there is always a blue sky to our stormy days. You are in control of how you respond to your stormy days and no matter what happens, it is always worth looking for the blue sky.
- According to research, you have approximately 50,000-80,000 thoughts a day! That's a lot of thinking! A lot of our thoughts are inside our brain, meaning it is how we talk to ourselves. How we talk to ourselves, or really our mind, can influence our entire day. It is important to take care of the way we speak to ourselves so that we can feel happy and healthy!
- Everyone wears a backpack to school. Some days your backpack is light and other times it feels a little heavier. Sometimes we come into school with an extra invisible backpack that adds some extra weight. It might be filled with sadness or worries and it weighs us down throughout the day. Sometimes what we need is to ask for help from someone we trust like a friend, teacher, or school counselor. Sometimes we need help remembering that these feelings will pass and there is someone there to help you carry your backpack or can help make it lighter.
We all have goals, some are for today, some are for our next test, and some are for what we want to do in the future as adults. Who you are today impacts the goals that you make in the future.
