News and Notes From Berlin Middle School 10/31/14

Pictures, Pictures, Please!

Hello and Happy Friday! This week's ENews is dedicated to celebrating our Sustained Silent Reading time and our PBIS Kickoff event from last week. As a gentle reminder, when you are teaching cool lessons, going on field trips, or if there is anything else that you'd like the community to be aware of, let us know. We can stop by your classroom and take pictures for you so you can focus on instruction.

Posting to the website, putting in the ENews and Parent Monthly Newsletter, and maybe even forwarding to administration for an Eastwick Press article is a good idea. We are doing so many great things at Berlin Middle School and our community needs to know.

Erin Clary (eclary@berlincentral.org) is the communications specialist for our district. Erin is in district every Wednesday. Please feel free to send her any ideas/pictures that you may have that will make for a great story to publish on our webpage. Although she is only in district every Wednesday, she does monitor her Berlin email regularly. Lets’ spread the news about all of the great things happening at BMS.

Thanks,

Jason

Sustained Silent Reading Successful!

On Friday, October 24th, Berlin Middle School participated in the first Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) Time. Students, Faculty, and Staff read, uninterrupted, from 7:30-8am. There were no announcements and this was a peaceful time to grab a book, magazine, and/or newspaper and silently read for enjoyment. As we continue to build a culture of reading at BMS, let's work together to find additional ways to support a love of reading! I would like to thank our faculty and staff for modeling what we expect to see in our students.

PBIS Kickoff is a Win!

On Friday, September 24th Berlin Middle School participated in a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) kickoff event. The entire middle school enjoyed an assembly facilitated by teachers and students where the four Bs (being respectful, being responsible, being safe, and being ready to learn) were emphasized.

Prizes were awarded for students who display the 4 Bs throughout their day.

Veterans' Day Assembly

The Annual Veterans’ Day Assembly will occur on Thursday, November 6th. The Vets will be served breakfast at 8:00, followed by our ceremony at 9:00. All students will come down at the end of period 2. This year we would like for all students to be seated in the auditorium before we bring the Vets in.

Next Generation Science Standards

I would like to thank Audrey Vanderhoef for establishing information sessions in our long-distance learning lab regarding the Next Generation Science Standards. The information sessions are designed to provide more information regarding New York's State's implementation timeline and also discusses how to read the standards. If you are interested in seeing how your lessons can pitch-in to the NGSS, see Audrey Vanderhoef - I think she's Raphael today!

Tenured Teacher Observations

Next week, schedule you observation with Monica. The deadline for your first observation is December 15th, but I would like to have them completed by December 1st. If you need assistance with the process, see me.
