30th Annual Parent Involvement Conference: "Power of the Past-Force of the Future"
Alice ISD parents and staff attended the 30th Annual Parent Involvement Conference at the Robstown Richard M. Borchard grounds on February 11th.
The conference hosted parents, educators, parent involvement coordinators and administrators from around the Coastal Bend. Topics for the sessions included the following: “School Nutrition Update” presented by Art Provencio and Silke West, ESC-2; “Preparing for the Future” presented by Steve Luis, Coastal Compass Education and Career Resource Center; and “How to Speak So Others Listen and Get Inspired” presented by Andres Lara, “The Cuban Guy”. Andres Lara's message was inspirational and heartfelt. At the age of 16 Andres escaped from Cuba without his parents and arrived in America not knowing a word of English. He shared some bits of advice as to how he was able to turn his life around and succeed in spite of the many challenges he faced.
The event was a success with a total of 600 participants attending this year and representing 24 districts from Region 2. This year’s themed conference of “Power of the Past—Force of the Future” was a fun and exciting event which the parents enjoyed in their 50’s attire. The Alice ISD parent liaisons prepared for the event by creating 50's memorabilia complete with vinyl records, pennants, and a diner themed backdrop.

Noonan Elementary AIM FOR THE STAARS
Aim for the STAARS parents night was held for parents of third and fourth graders. The event was held to inform parents about the upcoming reading, math, and writing tests. Teachers created awesome fact or fib activities for parents and also had parents actually practice some STAAR formatted questions! Campus Principal Evey Guerra went over accountability with parents and school counselor Gloria Rodriguez did a very quick overview of what the test is and how to help their children be prepared. Families were served hot dogs, chips, cookies, and punch. Parents and students were also able to take home individual smores and bags of trail mix since the themed event was camping. The night ended with door prize give-a-ways for both parents and students and each child who attended received a free dress, ice cream, and no homework pass.
