Long Hill School Newsletter
Week of September 28, 2020
Message from the Principal, Mrs. D'Aiuto
As we approach the end of September, I want to thank you for continuing to support Long Hill School and your child. Please remember that there is no school on Monday, September 28, 2020 as Shelton observes Yom Kippur. No work will be posted in your child's Google Classroom on that day.
Morning Arrival and Drop Off
I have been working with the Shelton Police to improve our morning drop off procedures. You have seen and will continue to see Shelton Police here at arrival time to assist us with morning drop off. I will be communicating out updated arrival information and procedures shortly.
Important updated SPSS School Operation Plan due to COVID-19
Here are some highlights from this plan:
- Starting Tuesday, October 13, PreK through fourth grade students will be brought back to in building instruction Tuesday through Friday with an early release schedule if the health metrics continue to warrant it.
- Distance Learning will continue to take place on Mondays.
- Parents still have the right to opt into voluntary Full Distance Learning.
- If you would like to change from Full Distance Learning to Hybrid, please email your request to adaiuto@sheltonpublicschools.org. The district requires three school days to prepare the classroom and bus route for return to in-person instruction.
This plan is posted on the district website's COVID-19 Quick Link.

COVID-19 Symptoms and When to Keep Your Child Home
- Parents of students who test positive for COVID-19 or who have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 are strongly encouraged to contact the school nurse.
- If your child is experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, please do not send your child to school. Please remember to call the main office to report the student's absence and reason.
- Parents of students are asked to complete a self-check each morning. The Self Check Checklist is available on the COVID-19 Quick Link. It includes taking one's temperature prior to leaving the house. Anyone with a temperature 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above must stay home. Parents should be aware that temperature is only one symptom of COVID-19.
Meal Distribution Reminder
Free breakfast and lunch, regardless of whether students receive in-building or distance learning, continues until either December 31, 2020 or until the funding from CSDE runs out (whichever occurs first).
Food is available for pick up on the following days and times at the Shelton High School bus loop:
- Monday-Friday 9:00am-11:00am
- Tuesday AND Thursday 5:00pm-6:00pm
Travel Information as of September 24, 2020
The following information has been communicated by the district:
- Shelton Public Schools are still following the 14 day self-quarantine protocols.
- Parents and staff are encouraged to visit the Connecticut COVID-19 Response portal for information regarding their travel. (https://portal.ct.gov/Coronavirus/travel)
- If a student or staff member is traveling it is the responsibility of the traveler to follow the necessary steps to return to school.
- Can travelers be tested for COVID-19 instead of self-quarantine? A Traveler is exempt from the self-quarantine requirement if the Affected Traveler (1) has had a test for COVID-19 in the seventy-two (72) hours prior to arrival in Connecticut or at any time following arrival in Connecticut, (2) the result of such COVID-19 test is negative, and (3) he or she has provided written proof of such negative test result to the Commissioner of Public Health via email to: DPH.COVID-Travel@ct.gov or via facsimile to: (860) 326-0529. If a test was obtained in the seventy-two (72) hours prior to arrival in Connecticut, or following arrival in Connecticut, and such Affected Traveler has not yet received his or her test results, such traveler shall remain in self-quarantine in Connecticut until a negative test result is submitted to the Commissioner of Public Health. If the test result is positive and the traveler is asymptomatic, he or she shall self-isolate for ten (10) days from the date of the test; if symptomatic, he or she should seek medical assistance. Travelers who test positive for COVID-19 prior to traveling to Connecticut should delay such travel and consult with a medical professional.
- School nurses are not to accept results for negative tests as a return to school after traveling; all information must be cleared by the Commissioner of Public Health.
- Proof of clearance from the Commissioner of Public Health must be sent to: Adrianna Collins, RN, COVID-19 Liaison: covid19@sheltonpublicschools.org
