From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
Congratulations to everyone who took the initiative and interviewed for next year's Student Leadership Team this past Wednesday. All had strong interviews, but the most exciting take-away - I thought - was how much our students are invested in the future of their Band and desire to make it a safe, caring place for their peers and the best musical experience it can be. Everyone should know that they always have the potential to effect change for the better, whatever grade level and/or role they currently are or aspire to in the future. The 2022-2023 Student Leadership Team is listed below - congratulations to all who were selected!
Congratulations to our feeder middle schools Audubon Park School, Glenridge Middle School, and Maitland Middle School on their performances this past weekend at FBA Middle School Concert MPA! It was great to see all of our future Winter Park Band students also get the chance to perform at a live MPA again, and wonderful to see the parents in the audience supporting their students. We're excited to have them step into the Band in the future!
Speaking of future students, this week we will welcome our incoming Wildcats and their parents back onto campus for our annual Ice-Breakers and Parent Informational Meeting on Tuesday, April 12, 6 - 8 PM. The 2022-2023 Student Leaders will welcome, get to know, and play games with our incoming Band members while their parents will meet with Mr. Clemente, Mr. Smith, and current Band Booster Board members to explain what it's like to be a part of the Winter Park Band. Please spread the word on your neighborhood's apps, such as "Nextdoor," so that we can catch everyone coming to WPHS next year!
This Wednesday, the Wind Symphony will perform at the UCF/Orlando Music for All Concert Band Invitational at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando. This is an exciting opportunity to perform at a professional space and get the chance to receive feedback from and work with nationally recognized clinicians. Our performance is scheduled for 10:00 AM on the Alexis and Jim Pugh Stage with an on stage clinic immediately following. Parents and other family who are interested in attending our performance are welcome to attend. As of our last communication with the festival directors, no tickets are required for our performance but QR codes will be available in the lobby to register your information. Anyone who is attending our performance but is not riding on the bus will not be allowed backstage and may only enter/exit through the main lobby of the Dr. Philips Center.
2022-2023 Wind Symphony Auditions will take place after school this week. Sign up sheets have been posted and are located on the Band office window. All students preparing for next week's auditions should double check that they are preparing all aspects of the audition, including sight-reading. Sign up sheets for the 2022-2023 Jazz Ensemble I Auditions have been posted on the Band office window. Please don't hesitate to ask both Mr. Clemente and Mr. Smith questions when preparing the audition - better to be sure of the answers than be surprised when entering the audition room!
This past week there were significant changes made to the Lakeside Jazz Festival schedule that required alterations to our itinerary. I ask all Jazz families to open and check the updated itinerary attached to this Newsletter email.
Finally, we have our next Band social event this weekend - Band Bowling @ Aloma Bowl! We look forward to seeing everyone who can make it for some fun and fellowship from 1 - 3 PM on Saturday. My son, Connor, is planning to make an appearance!
Let's make it a great week!
Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Natalie Storch
Week of April 10, 2022
Please encourage any incoming potential band students you know (for next year) and their parents to come to the Freshman student ice breaker/parent information event on April 12 at 7pm. Even if the parents or students you know are on the fence, it’s a great opportunity to meet the student leaders and learn additional information about the WPHS band program. If you know anyone who has questions, please have them reach out to Mr. Clemente, Mr. Smith, or any current board members or band parents for additional information.
This week is the UCF performance/clinic, so please come watch and support our students if you are able (more information from Mr. Clemente).
April is filled with musical events—Lakeside Jazz Festival, Night on Broadway, end of year concerts for band and orchestra, etc. Please keep a close eye on the calendar. May 3 is band registration night for next year (please tell anyone you know who has an incoming Freshman—information on the band’s website). May 6 is the band banquet (it will be live not virtual this year!), so please let me know if you are interested in helping with decorations, etc. at njstorch@yahoo.com.
Have a great week everyone!

Wind Symphony Auditions: THIS WEEK April 11 - 15
Brass / Woodwind:
- A Chromatic Scale, ascending and descending, demonstrating your comfortable range, triplets or sixteenths subdivision.
- 2 prepared etudes – available on the WPHS Band website at www.winterparkhsband.com and/or from your director.
- A short Sight-Reading excerpt.
Percussion:
- Mallet Etude, Timpani Etude, and Snare Drum Etude – available on the WPHS Band website at www.winterparkhsband.com and/or from your director.
- A short Sight-Reading excerpt on snare drum and mallet.
Helpful Suggestions
- Begin preparing your audition materials now and seek out help from your Band Director and/or private teacher.
- Practice sight-reading prior to your audition.
- Pay careful attention to etude tempos and musical markings (dynamics, style, etc.).
- For the chromatic scale – more octaves are not necessarily better! Be sure that what you perform represents your very best sound, and at a comfortable tempo to make the scale clear and precise.
- Perform your audition materials for your friends and family (or Band Director) ahead of the actual audition to build confidence.
Contact both Mr. Clemente and Mr. Smith (Michael.Clemente@ocps.net / Daniel.Smith2@ocps.net) if you have any questions!

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and Improvement
We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.
Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.
In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.
Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:
- Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
- Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
- Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
- Replace wheel bearings on front axle
- Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
- Replacing or repairing the small trailer
- And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.
Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.
Please contact Keith Gavin at kgavin@sscands.com for further information on donations or to provide the goods or services to the improvements that are so desperately needed.
We will be also seeking volunteers to help at a Trailer Work- Days throughout the month of January. We will be repairing minor body damage, painting the trailer and removing the old logos. Please contact Keith Gavin @ kgavin@sscands.com if you can assist.
