East Middle School
Parent Newsletter: Late Summer Edition II
A Note From the Principal
Dear East Middle School Students, Parents, and Guardians:
Everyone in the office is gearing up to have both students and staff back. It's pretty quiet around here without the hustle and bustle of the normal school day, but it has been amazing to meet students and families during registration, as well as reconnect with familiar faces. Speaking of registration, there is still ONE day left.
Registration Schedule:
- Tuesday, August 8th from 11:00AM-7:00PM
Is your student new to the district? Below are the registration times:
- Wednesday, August 9th from 10:00AM-5:00PM
- Thursday, August 10th from 10:00AM-5:00PM
If you are a new student and need access to the enrollment forms? Click HERE. Please contact Wanda Gordon, registrar, at wanda.gordon@raypec.org OR call the office at 816.388.4009 to set up a time to meet during one of the new student registration times.
We hope that you are enjoying your last few days of summer vacation with your student, and we look forward to being back in the official swing on August 23rd!
Take care!
Sincerely,
Katie Campbell

17-18 School Start Times
There are some changes to the school day schedule this year. With grade level reconfiguration, some start and end times have changed slightly to accommodate school scheduling, efficiency in transportation, and staff collaboration.
For middle school students, the school day begins at 7:35 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m. Because supervision is not available until 7:10 a.m., students will not be allowed in the building until that time unless they have made prior arrangements with staff members. Students arriving prior to 7:20 a.m. will need to report to the cafeteria. At 7:25 a.m., all students are dismissed from the cafeteria or bus and will need to report to their first class of the day by 7:30 a.m. Car riders will also need to report directly to their first class of the day. Breakfast will be available to students until 7:30 a.m.
Back To School Information
- Preview Day for 6th & 7th graders is on Monday, August 21st in the morning, 7:35AM-10:10AM (bus services will be running that morning for students). Please note the time has been updated from the last newsletter and that it is the correct time. Hopefully this will not interrupt the previous plans families have already made for eclipse viewing.
- Meet the Teacher Night is the evening of August 21st from 4:00PM-7:00PM
- The first day of school is Wednesday, August 23rd.
- There will be no school on Monday, September 4th in honor of Labor Day.

Getting the Nitty-Gritty About Registration
Central Registration Location: East Middle School
Online registration is open:
Online registration is open through Aug. 8, and a parent in the household where the student primarily resides may complete the registration forms using the Parent Portal: https://sdm.sisk12.com/RP360/apphost/TylerSis#/parent
Begin by choosing the 2017-2018 school year, and clicking on the Online Registration button. Note: Be sure to click on the SUBMIT button after you have marked all forms as complete. If you did not receive an email about online registration, you don't have a Parent Portal account, or if you have questions, please call 816-892-1333.
Verify residency:
When you register your student(s) for the 2017-2018 school year, you need to provide one document to verify residency. Acceptable proofs of residency include utility bills (water, electric, or gas) in the resident's name, showing the service address. The documents must be recent (within 30 days). A final notice or disconnect notice is not an acceptable proof of residency. For more information about residency verification, contact Debbie Johnson at 892-1347 or Rebecca Coster at 892-1341.
Important Immunization Information
All students must present documentation of immunizations, including month, day, and year of each immunization before attending school.
- Kindergarten: Five immunizations
- Incoming 8th graders: Tdap and meningococcal. (The Tdap vaccine helps protect adults and adolescents against 3 diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough.)
- High School: Two doses of meningococcal vaccine by 12th grade. In this two-series immunization, the first dose is given with the Tdap prior to 8th grade, and the final dose is required prior to the 12th grade year.
The Health Department will accept some insurance, including Medicaid. Uninsured or under-insured children may receive immunizations at half the regular price at this clinic: $10 per child - cash or check only.

Back-to-School Tips
2. Practice the morning routines so that it isn't stressful for anyone in the family. Talk to your student about the morning routine, start waking up a bit earlier to prep for the start of the school year. You can go a step further and create a checklist for the night before as well as the morning of school.
3. Have your student's supplies ready to go on the first day of school. While these things are not necessarily needed on the first day, making sure your student has them will decrease their stress level on that first day.
4. Review your student's schedule prior to the first day, including the start and end times of school.
5. Practice opening a locker using a combination lock. Even if students used combination locks the year prior, sometimes they might lose the skill during the summer.
