Scout's Honor Theme
"Prepare In Necessities Rather Than Wants"
One theme in Scout’s Honor, written by Avi, is that you should always be prepared in the necessities before the wanted items. On lines 74-82, it shows all the things that the narrator brought. He brought things like comic books, a blanket and pillow, three peanut-butter-jelly sandwiches, matches, and an old flashlight. I find it weird that he brought comic books, but not tools to build a shelter with. Instead of his food choice, he should’ve brought something that wouldn’t be a problem to eat if it got smashed. He needs to be more prepared, and needs to bring the things that he may need most on the camping trip, like string to help with a shelter. He should also bring extra clothes, so it would be ossible to get Scout's Craft.
On lines 83-85, it shows the two things that Horse brings. The two things he brings are a mattress, and four cans of beans. I believe he isn’t prepared at all, and needed to think about tools as well as the narrator. Horse also needed to think about bringing a sleeping bag instead of a mattress, so he could actually get on the train without leaving it behind - line 116. He should also consider bringing a source of light, because the narrator's flashlight won’t be enough for all of them. It would be smart of him to bring extra clothing so it's actually possible to complete the camping trip. He should think about what he needs, more than his wants.
On lines 86-92, it shows the many things that their fiend, Max brought. Some of the things he brought were a frying pan, hot dogs, a box of crackers, mustard, celery soda, Tootsie Rolls, a hatchet, and compass. I believe it's not important to bring all the food, but he should keep some of it. The hatchet will help, because it can be used to create a shelter. He should bring extra clothing so he can actually get somewhere on the camping trip. Other than the food and extra clothes, I think Max is good to go. I think the only thing they're forgetting to bring, is friendship and teamwork.
