Locals Win Awards from National Izaak Walton League
by Jim Sweeney
Des Moines, Iowa — The Izaak Walton League of America held its annual convention in Des
Moines, Iowa last week and presented its annual awards on Wednesday, July 18 th .
The Porter County Chapter won two awards for chapters under 500 members. The James Lawton Childs Award goes to the chapters with the best overall conservation programs and the Robert C. O’Hair Award goes to the chapters with the best youth education programs.
The Chapter was cited for its continued restoration work at the Frame Family Conservation Area, sponsoring of local clean water programs, bat conservation efforts, and their efforts to prevent a commercial banquet hall from being built on the beach at the Indiana Dunes State Park.
Their Family Nature Nights program is a popular program the chapter takes into local schools and to other public functions, such as NaturePalooza in Valparaiso and Gnomes Day Out at the Frame property. The Chapter also has worked extensively with local Eagle Scout candidates and their fathers and with 4H.
Chapter member Tamatha Patterson was presented with a Conservation Award for her work in developing the chapter bat conservation program and all the time invested on the Chapter
webpage. Chapter president Gary Brown accepted the awards for the chapter at the Conservation Luncheon. “We are grateful to have been recognized by the Izaak Walton League,” he said. “We have a small group but we are dedicated and passionate about what we do.” “Tammy has been a wonderful addition to the chapter,” said Brown, “She brings a scientific background that gives our projects more credibility.”

Bike Tour In Memory of Charlotte Read
READ HOUSE TO CAROL COOK OVERLOOK BIKE TOUR
Join us for PCC's first Bike Tour September 28. Travel 16.8 miles round trip. We start to gather in the Discovery Charter School parking lot at 9am. Set off at 10am sharp for the historic Read House on Tremont in Porter. There will be a small talk on the history of the house and what it meant to the preservation of the Dunes, now National Park. We'll meet Herb Read and honor the memory of his wife Charlotte Read. Cyclists then proceed through duneland prairie and woodland to their destination at PCC's Carol Cook Wetland Overlook. Riders may view birds from the boardwalk birding platform, meet a bird rescued by Humane Indiana Wildlife and have lunch with Discovery Trackers 4-H Club.

thank you Endowment...AGAIN!
PCC would like to publicly thank the National IWLA Endowment for 2 new 2019 grants it has awarded to our chapter! $5000 for our E-STEM in the Field program for Fall, 2019 and Spring, 2020. Together, this makes it a $10K project with the IN Div Endowment and NiSource grants.
And, $4444 was awarded to fund PCC's new Family Hunting Heritage project. This provides equipment, training and opportunity for our new Family Members in outdoor recreation.
We are honored that the IWLA Endowment board supports our little chapter so generously!
family hunting heritage program
PCC's new Family Hunting Heritage program has been funded by the IWLA National Endowment grant. We are so grateful to them for their generosity and approval.
This program provides equipment, training and opportunity for our new Family Members in outdoor recreation. PCC is actively reaching into the community to offer this program to families of NW Indiana. This is also a great way to increase our membership and share all we have to offer.
