McKay High School Weekly Newsletter

Week of March 6 --- 17

A Message from the Admin Team

It is hard to believe that we have arrived to March, this month is full of opportunities to connect with the school, whether it be through one of our Spring events, or visiting with staff at our second round of student led conferences on March 22 and 23. Please do what you can to connect with us, ask questions, or look for places to collaborate with school staff. Let us not forget that later this month we will having Spring Break from March 24 to April 2.

The administration at McKay believe that the education of our community is a collaborative effort. Our students would not be experiencing the amount of success that they are if it were not for all of our stakeholders. All of the efforts that the community take count in our success and are not missed by the admin team. Thank you!

Finally as we begin plans for the 2023--24 school year we are beginning the recruitment of a parent advisory council. This team would meet regularly to help school administration in influencing decisions that impact students and families. If you have had an interest in how school decisions are made, or would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about McKay HS and the Salem Keizer SD this would be for you. Please email Assistant Principal Antonio Mercado at mercado_antonio@salkeiz,k12.or.us to be part of this work.

Take care

Speech and Debate in Oregon City

(Message per coach David Blommendahl)

This Saturday, Seth Matheny was joined by our newest team member Izaak De Jesus at the Diana Vasquez Duque Invitational at Oregon City High School. Seth once again participated in Open Impromptu, as well as taking on Radio Commentary for the first time. Izaak presented an Original Oratory on the topic of censorship. This was a very well attended and highly competitive tournament. Despite this, Seth turned in his strongest performance yet in Impromptu coming in second in two of the three preliminary rounds. He also turned in a solid and respectable performance in radio. Considering it was his first tournament, Izaak held his own. He now knows he needs to work on memorization as he goes into state qualifiers in a few weeks.
