Maryville School Counseling
September 2014
September Guidance
September focuses on the 1st Habit: Be Proactive. Students will learn:
You're in Charge.
I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
You can learn more about the Seven Habits of Happy Kids and becoming a Leader in Me school by visiting the Leader in Me webpage at :
I also have additional copies of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens if you would like to read that book. The Leader in Me program is based upon this book and once we decide to implement the Leader in Me program (for real, not just Mrs. Barron's shoty attempt), reading Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens is a mandatory requirement for staff.
There are lots of resources and websites on www.pinterest.com. You can search for "Leader In Me" or "Seven Habits" to find links. One of my favorites is http://crabtreecounseling.blogspot.com/. It is a counseling website, but she has a ton of resources for the Seven Habits. She is also located in Kentucky so the standards all match up.
Recently all of the elementary school counselors in Bullitt County met up for a Seven Habits training. Almost every school (definitely all of the PBIS schools) are headed towards the Leader in Me. Most schools are beginning to teach the seven habits. Nichols has implemented the program for the longest thus far and Hebron Middle School is implementing it to fidelity.
ABRI Data
Overall the environment at Maryville has been a very respectful and polite one. Keep up the good work of teaching expectations and recognizing those students who are modeling 2 RSK for their class mates.
During August guidance I was very impressed with how the classes presented and behaved themselves. Your hard work is showing!
Helpful Apps and Resources
Mannerific: A free app to teach manners at school. This app is definitely presented as a game and is fun (I've played it myself) so it may not be the best thing to give to a child in need of some serious manner education, but it would be a good reminder to someone just having a bad day or as a center. Children have to shut the mouths of talking students, cover sneezing noses, cover mouths that are chewing food and wash dirt off hands. Download on ITunes: Mannerific by TVO Kids.
www.CANVA.com: Make and print free posters, flyers and handouts for your classroom. This can be used for motivational quotes, displaying rules and expectations or for special projects. It's 100% free so even students can use it.
