Joyfully Embracing Our Mission
St. Clare School Family News | 21 March 2021
The New Covenant
Whoever serves me must follow me, says the Lord;
and where I am, there also will my servant be.
~ John 12:26
Dear St. Clare School Families,
I am in awe of the example you have provided for your children in your support of our .one.love.march.2021.
Over 250 hygiene kits and cart loads of non-perishable goods will be assembled and then donated to Casa de Clara and City Team Ministries’ Heritage Home.
The kits will be assembled this next week by students and teachers. Each will contain travel-sized toiletries and a card decorated by students with messages of hope and care.
Recognizing the inequity in the pricing and taxation of feminine products, middle school students donated dozens of packages to benefit the women served by our partner organizations.
Over $500 in donations were received from families towards the purchase of additional kits and feminine products.
Ms. Christa Hanson, former director of Learning and Loving Education Center, once a ministry of the Presentation Sisters, spoke to the students regarding the importance of education for immigrant women and their preschool-aged children in breaking the cycle of poverty and violence.
Miss Camille, a Catholic Worker from Casa de Clara, spoke to students about Dorothy Day, the Catholic Worker Movement and its mission and ministry, including Showers to the People and its door ministry of hospitality to the marginalized in downtown San Jose.
Students from Notre Dame High School, will speak to middle schoolers regarding the importance of advocating for equitable treatment of women.
Families are challenged to immerse themselves in a day in the life of a food insecure family.
Students are encouraged to make sacrifices at home in order to contribute to the CRS Rice Bowl.
I am grateful to our SAC Mission and Catholic Identity Committee (Cyndi Banaag, Ryan Mendoza and Theresa Marcelo) who have partnered with PTG leadership (Margarita Guizar, Katy Kerns and our Room Reps). Working with teachers and staff, this committed group of parents are engaging the community and facilitating the formation of students on how to be servant leaders, especially in these troubled times. Thank you to all of you! You have exhibited what it means to be Catholic Christians with your prayerful sacrifice, your almsgiving and your fasting.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2021
Those who applied to Catholic high schools received their acceptance letters on Friday. Many of them have been admitted with distinction. Their success is a testament to the support of their families, the formation provided to them by their teachers and their perseverance throughout their years at St. Clare. No matter what high school they choose to attend, St. Clare will always be their home: a place where they will always be loved and accepted. Well done to all 37 of you!
GRATITUDE ABOUNDS
Another SAC Committee, our Enrollment & Marketing Committee (Chiqui Tañedo, Pedro Espinoza, Cyndi Banaag, Vianey Nava, Melissa Reynoso, Mrs. Rizzo and Izabela Godzina) have been working diligently to share the good news of St. Clare and invite people to consider joining our community. The Committee has been very active in promoting our school via social media channels and have been collaborating on virtual meet and greets, as well as preparing collateral materials to distribute to prospective families. We thank them, along Mrs. Rizzo, Mrs. Filion and our teachers for their willingness to be part of the recruitment process.
We are grateful to all of you for continuing to spread the word so that we may continue building on the 165-year strong legacy and tradition here in Santa Clara.
JOG-A-THON EXCITEMENT HAS BEGUN!
Sponsorships are coming in, the t-shirt design contest is underway and the incentives are amazing! Take this opportunity to share your student’s 99pledges page. $18,104 has already been raised (36%) towards our $50,000 goal! https://app.99pledges.com/fund/scs30thjat How great would it be to have new iPads and to have air-conditioned and well-ventilated classrooms!
Join us at Wellness Wednesday Assemblies to learn more and to get everyone excited about being part of providing an amazing learning environment for our precious children!
PARENT VOLUNTEER HOURS AND SERVICE LEARNING HOURS
We encourage you to take some time to log your volunteer hours in ParentSquare. We thank the 59 out of 181 (33%) families who have recorded over 824 hours! That’s an average of 14 hours per family during a time when we have limited opportunities to serve in-person. I’m sure there are many more hours served that have not yet been recorded. Please do so!
At the same time, students in middle school who are living their faith in action by volunteering, one way or another should record their experience using the Faith in Action Service Learning Form: https://tinyurl.com/StClareService.
Remember that we have some opportunities to serve as Yard Duty Supervisors a week at a time. Please sign up in ParentSquare: https://www.parentsquare.com/feeds/6109771. Stay tuned for Saturday Work Days coming up soon!
Inquire about opportunities to serve by calling the school office 408-246-6797 or emailing stclare-office@dsj.org, or Ms. McKinnon at teresea.mckinnon@dsj.org.
Thank you to all of you for being such amazing partners. It truly does take a village!

STUDENT WELL-BEING AND THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Santa Clara County anticipates moving into the Orange Tier next week. We realize that more of our parents will be able to return to work in person. Please continue to let us know of your needs and situations so that we can offer support.
More importantly, please keep your teachers and the office informed of your child’s well-being so that we can work together to do what we can to support them. As research and medical professionals have advised, in-person learning is of great benefit to all children. In matters relating to your child and his or her experience at school, we encourage you to connect with your child’s teacher first. Our teachers greatly appreciate your trust in their ability to be able to provide a caring and conducive learning environment for all students.
As always, I am grateful for your partnership. If you have any questions or concerns, you can always email me: cecile.mantecon@dsj.org.
May the Holy Spirit fill this fifth week of Lent with transformative moments in wonder and awe of the new covenant before us!
Stay safe and well!
