Mrs. Melendez always shows care and patience to her students. She creates a safe environment where students are allowed to thrive and grow. She never judges others, is gentle with the feelings of others, and is always showing gratefulness Even though she doesn't say much, when she does, it is thoughtful, profound, and encouraging. She has the ability to bring calm to every situation.

The kind-heartedness of Mrs. Melendez does not go unnoticed. Well deserved!

Nominations for 6th Grade Hope Squad Members are the week of March 6th and 5th Grade March 20th through guidance lessons.

Hope Squad finalists will be bring home a Parent Permission slip on march 24th. Once all the parent permissions slips are obtained members will be announced on March 31st on the morning announcements. There will be a Parent meeting at the Center or Performing Arts on Thursday March 30th, 6:00 to 7:30 pm for all Hope Squad Members and their parents/guardians only.

Congratulations to our UIL Huskies for placing 3rd overall! We are so proud of all of you. A special thanks to our dynamic coaches. We will post a list of the team in the next edition of Huskies in the Know!

Mr. Young is described by parents as someone who always has assignments ready for his students, helpful, and answers immediately anytime they have questions. One parent said he helped their struggling student and brought out the brightness in their child. He creates a welcoming and comfortable environment for students. Co workers described Mr. Young as being instrumental in being assertive and sharing their passion for education, student/family advocacy, establishing rapport and demanding respect from all. He is active in several campus initiatives, and always respectfully consistent. His realism is much appreciated, and the informal mental checks are monumental. He is assertive, passionate, comedic, and our Teacher of the Year!

Did You Know?

The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test is changing! The STAAR redesign is a result of House Bill (HB) 3906 passed by the 86th Texas Legislature in 2019. The redesign will be implemented in the state summative assessments administered in the Spring of 2023.

Major changes:

-Online testing

-New Question Types (no more than 75% of the STAAR test can be multiple choice questions)

-Cross-curricular passages

-Evidence-based writing

STAAR Redesign Information

Parents, please remember the following safety protocols:

• When visiting, you must present a government issued ID to be run through Raptor.
• If you are here for a conference, eat lunch with your child, volunteering, shadowing, etc, your visitor badge must be visible at all times
• If one parent is admitted into the building, please do not follow behind them ("tailgate) without being verified. Parents, please do not hold the doors for anyone.
• You must go through the pickup/drop off line in the mornings. Please do not drop your students off in the street or in the back parking lot.
• Remember that there is no supervision prior to 8:00am. If your student is arriving prior to that, please remind them of behavior and safety expectations.
• Please exhibit proper decorum at all times.
• Remind your child to NEVER open the door for anyone.

Advisory Arrival Beginning Monday, 10/3 for 5th and 6th Grade

• Students enter building at 8:00 and travel to 1st block (5th grade), WIN time (6th grade) or to breakfast. After eating breakfast, travel to 1st period or WIN class.
• Students who are late (arrival after 8:30am) are required to have a tardy pass
• Classroom: visit lockers and enter classroom (once in classroom, students are not allowed to exit)
• Breakfast: students will be dismissed once they are finished and travel to 1st block
• Restroom access is not available until 8:45am unless there is a medical need.
• Advisory Activities: planner, reading, AR tests, unfinished work, Project Learning/Lift Off, and teacher tutoring will take place in classroom

Parents and Guardians,

Please remember that you must go through the drop off and pick up line in the mornings and afternoons. Do not go down the bus lane, do not park in/next to the teacher parking lot in the back, do not park at Jandrucko, and do not park on Collins. This is for the safety of our students. If you are parked here and asked to move, please be polite and adhere to the procedures. Thank you!

• Please remember to use the appropriate grade level lane for drop off and pick up
• There is no supervision prior to 8:00am. Doors open at 8:00am. The tardy bell rings at 8:30am. Dismissal is at 4:00pm
• In the morning, students may either eat breakfast in the cafeteria or report to the gym. After this week, the library will be open in the mornings for students from 800am-820am. Students need to be in the cafeteria for breakfast or the library by 8:10am. Late buses are an exception. Breakfast, the library, and gyms are at a Level Zero.
• All students will need to have a book with them to read. The expectation for the mornings no matter where you go is for students to be reading.

What is Courage?

Courage is the ability and strength to face something that may be difficult or challenging. Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather perseverance in the presence of fear and the willingness to stand up for what is right or try something new even though it may be uncomfortable or uncertain.

Why focus on Courage?

• Courage encourages engagement. Courage helps students raise their hand, participate, try new things, and voice their opinions.
• Courage builds self-confidence. Courage is the choice to act. By doing something, students increase their belief in themselves and their ability to do difficult or challenging things.
• Courage can help reframe a negative. When something does not go as planned or a student gets upset about a mistake or failure, courage can help reframe the event in a positive light.

Courage in Action:

• Provide leadership opportunities. Students can learn and demonstrate leadership by teaching and mentoring others, classroom roles and responsibilities, or community outreach.
• Encourage discussion and debate. Foster curiosity and empower students to formulate ideas and engage in respectful discourse and conversations.
• Celebrate failures. Create opportunities to reduce fear of failure and celebrate when students try something new, even if they are not successful the first time.

Please be aware that meals in your school cafeteria are not automatically free this year. You must pay for the meals or qualify for free/reduced meal benefits.
