Spring 2016
Letter from the President
Happy Spring! The weather is finally looking like it will stabilize and hopefully we will see no more snowy, sleety surprises!
In spite of the long winter, GLC-SOPHE has ignored the urge to hibernate and has been diligently working on some exciting new projects. In February the E-Board voted to purchase S’More software to facilitate the preparation of our newsletter. Committee chairs have also used the software to promote their work. Our grant writing workshop is fast approaching, and for those of you who plan to join us you might have noticed that we are using Eventbrite for registration this year. The speaker, David Bauer, is a nationally recognized presenter on the “How To’s” of grant writing; something we all could benefit from. You might have noticed that you were starting to receive reports from the Advocacy Committee. Kim Deans is doing a great job on generating momentum on many important issues. If you are interested in advocacy, please contact her at kimdeans@live.com.
In late March I had the privilege of representing GLC-SOPHE at the national SOPHE meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a very well attended meeting with over 900 health educators attending sessions, networking, and presenting their work. I was honored to be part of a panel session which allowed me to present my work on “Food Quality, Availability, and Price in Neighborhood Stores” at one of the many “standing room only” sessions. The business meeting of SOPHE was enlightening as the outgoing president discussed the importance of partnerships with other professional organizations and how it is mutually beneficial in all areas of health education. Another topic that was discussed was the closing of the gap between clinical and community health services. This intersectionality provides great opportunities for health educators and is certainly an area to discuss in more detail within our own organizations.
Wishing you a healthy and productive spring.

Program Highlight
WISEWOMAN Entrepreneurial Gardening Program
The WISEWOMAN Entrepreneurial Gardening Program provides participants with skills and resources to increase healthy behaviors and earn additional income through gardening. The program is for women aged 40-64 who are low income and uninsured or underinsured. As one program participant says,
“The Entrepreneurial Gardening Program, has, and is teaching us how to provide ourselves with better eating habits, and fresh organic veggies & fruits….I was very grateful for this help. I canned everything extra that I couldn’t eat fresh. This saw my husband and I through the Winter, for fresh veggies & fruits. You can’t know how much it helped. Thank you.”
