MIDDLE SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY LINK
Dear Skoglund Middle School parent;
Our school is participating in a school climate survey conducted by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) at the University of Colorado. The purpose of this survey is to identify the strengths and needs of our school regarding school safety and violence prevention. The results will help us identify areas needing improvement and develop strategies to address those needs. In addition to surveying the students, we want to gain the perspective of all parents and guardians who have children who attend our school.
The survey is anonymous and is taken through a secure online server. Your participation is completely voluntary. The survey can be completed in approximately 15 minutes. Only one survey per family needs to be completed. Our goal is that at least 80% of households complete the survey. Response rates below 80% cannot be considered representative of the total population of parents and guardians.
It is very important that once you log in to the survey that you complete it in one sitting. Logging out of the survey will end the session, and you will not be able to log back in to the same survey in order to complete it.
To participate in the survey, go to the following link:
https://www.safe-schools.org/school-climate/parent/?b=952151-73876
If you do not have access to a computer to complete the survey, please let me or Katrina Ruggles know and we will make arrangements to give you access to one of the school’s computers. If you need to take the survey in Spanish, you will see links in the upper right hand corner of the survey page for both English and Spanish.
You will have approximately two weeks to complete the survey. After all the data has been collected, researchers at CSPV will analyze the data and issue a summary report.
Thank you for your participation in this important survey!
Sincerely,
Katrina Ruggles, Counselor, Skoglund Middle School

ONLY SEND THE FORM BACK IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEY.
We are doing our annual climate survey next week. These letters have information about these surveys. These surveys are very important to help us provide a safe learning environment for our youth. If you DO NOT want your child to participate, you need to sign it and send it back to school. We can print it here for you if you let us know you DO NOT want them to do it. We will also be sending out links for the parent surveys. Please watch for these to come soon.

SAFE COMMUNITIES ~ SAFE SCHOOLS ONLINE SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY
Consent Form
Dear Parent/Guardian,
We are asking permission for your student to participate in an online survey that will be administered during the 2022-2023 school year. All students in grades 6-8 are being invited to participate.
The purpose of the survey is to investigate the conditions that exist at your student’s school. Topics include bullying and violence at school; the relationships children have with their parents and teachers; and drug, alcohol or cigarette use by students and their peers. You can see a copy of your student’s survey here:
Test site link: SCSS Climate Survey Parent Preview Link Enter code: 952151
Once you access the test site and enter the school code, select the “Students” survey and click on the ‘continue’ button. You will need to click on “I assent” at the bottom of the page to access the survey. You do not need to enter any data, just click through each page to view the items included on the survey.
The survey will be conducted anonymously. Any and all research information that is collected will be protected against all forms of disclosure, except as required by court order. The identities of all survey participants will not be recorded, and any information that could lead to the identification of individual students completing the survey will be removed.
This survey has no direct risks or benefits to your student. It is hoped that this survey and related research efforts will provide benefits to schools in the form of improved knowledge on the origins, dynamics, and impacts of school violence and on ways to make our schools safer in the face of increased violence.
Research indicates that when schools experience violence, substance use and bullying, learning is hampered, academic performance declines, absenteeism increases and the general well-being of both children and teachers is diminished. This survey allows your student’s school the opportunity to identify its strengths and challenges, and to address problem areas, which could lead to increased academic performance as well as improved well-being for students and staff.
Your student’s participation in this survey is voluntary and without compensation, and he or she may refuse to answer any specific question in the survey. If your student wishes to withdraw from the survey, he or she may do so at any time without giving any reason or explanation. If he or she chooses to withdraw from the survey, any information he or she may have provided prior to withdrawing will not be used.
You have the right to decline your student’s participation in the survey if you wish. If you do decline, your student will be allowed to read, complete school assignments or participate in an alternative activity while the survey is being administered.
The survey is being conducted by our school through an agreement with the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. If you have any questions regarding the survey, please feel free to contact Sabrina Arredondo Mattson, PhD at 303-735-1633.
Please check the box below if you DO NOT want your student to participate in the survey and send the letter back to school.

ATTENDANCE

Why is being in school every day important?
IT IMPACTS YOUR GRADES
Even if you miss just a few days here and there, your grades are likely to suffer.
IT AFFECTS HOW YOU LEARN
When you are in class you learn the material along with your classmates. When you’re not in class, you need to learn the material on your own, which is stressful, time-consuming, and a much less effective way to learn.
GRADUATION IS AT RISK
Chronic absenteeism is the leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school and not graduate.
YOUR FUTURE DEPENDS ON IT
When you’re in school every day, you get a better education, which means you’ll have more career options and a much brighter future!
MISSING TOO MUCH SCHOOL?
-Have a good night time routine that includes getting everything ready for the next day.
-Go to bed early enough to ensure you get enough sleep-and don’t risk oversleeping in the morning.
-Have a plan in place if you miss the bus or your ride to school.
-Form a support network at the school, including friends, teachers, and other staff.
-Know and understand your school’s attendance policy, and know that to do if you must miss school.
* Please understand that as a Parent/Guardian, you are responsible for notifying the school secretary to excuse your child. If the call is not completed by the end of the day your child will be marked as unexcused.
** We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to not miss any school days**
