FROM THE PRINCIPAL
HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD
On Friday, December 21, our OES students and staff will participate in an all-day, all-school event. Students will travel in multi-age groups to classrooms in the building where they will learn how holidays are celebrated in countries around the world. Students will hear stories, create banners or pictures, read books/articles, and construct a variety of projects that promote an appreciation and understanding of other celebrations and cultures.
Our lunch schedule will be different and we will provide a snack (crackers) for all students. We will also have an indoor recess with mixed grade levels. This will eliminate the need to prepare for recess with boots, snow pants etc. We're very excited about the event and look forward to a wonderful day for everyone!

DECEMBER FOCUS - EMPATHY
Building an understanding of what others are feeling, how their own actions can impact on others, and why someone might be experiencing feelings at a particular time is a valuable life skill for children to possess. Helping young children to develop a strong sense of empathy is beneficial because:
It helps them to build a sense of security and stronger relationships with other children and educators, positioning them well for learning
It encourages tolerance and acceptance of others
It promotes good mental health
It promotes social harmony and can reduce the likelihood of bullying
The benefits of empathetic thinking flow into adult life too. Empathetic adults may have:
- Greater success personally and professionally
Higher levels of overall happiness
A better ability to understand others, like customers or co-workers
More success in leadership positions
More satisfying relationships and be better at dealing with conflict
Lower levels of stress
MATH PRACTICE
Developing math skills is an ongoing process for everyone! Here are a few things you can do to help at home:- set aside time to practice basic math facts - good old flashcards work great (add, subtract, multiply, divide) or there are online programs all kids know about
- develop place value skills and have your child understand what the value of each place means
- practice skip counting, pattern recognition, counting money... and telling time
ATTENTION CHORUS FAMILIES!
Mr. Alcazar has asked for an extended rehearsal on Dec 5 and Dec 12. Chorus will end at 3:30pm on those days to allow the group extra practice time in anticipation of their Dec 19 concert at Olson at 6pm. Thanks!
WARM CLOTHING FOR RECESS
Please remind your children to have hats, coats, mittens/gloves, boots, and snow pants for winter play during recess. We limit children without boots and snow pants to the blacktopped area in hopes that their clothing stays dry.
If your child needs boots or snow pants or a warm winter coat, please contact the office and we will make every effort to try to help find what is needed.
Our "Lost and Found" is often filled with mismatched gloves and hats, so please encourage your child to search for any lost items.
FAMILY EVENTS CALENDAR
