Short Stories
Characterization-
~Tammy had a short temper but she was a generally a kind person.
~Characterization is used to reveal the personality of characteristics.
Protagonist-
~The movie, 5th Wave, was about Cassie's race to save her brother.
~Protagonist are the main characters of stories.
Antagonist-
~The joker was constantly causing problems and Batman had to come in and save the day.
~The antagonist is usually the villain or character working against the protagonist.
Flat Character-
~Bella's friends in Twilight
~Bella's friends from twilight are flat characters because they didn't get involved in the internal conflict.
Round Character-
~Hamlet from Shakespeare's Hamlet
~Hamlet showed quite a bit of internal conflict in Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Static Character-
~Pumbaa and Timon King.
~Timon and Pumbaa stayed the same throughout the Lion King.
Dynamic Character-
~Shrek
~Shrek is a dynamic character because he goes from being harsh to softening up at the end.
Internal Conflict-
~When the devil and angel pop up on people's shoulders in movies.
~Homer displays internal conflict when he argues with himself in his head.
External Conflict-
~Ninja Turtles fighting
~When the ninja turtles fight it is not within their mind which makes it external conflict.
Diction-
~Cat Woman refers to the villain, but cat lady refers to a lady who likes cats.
~Diction is based of your word choice. Your word choice could determine the meaning of what you say.
Denotation-
~For example dog- a domesticated carnivorous mammal that typically has a long snout, an acute sense of smell, and a barking, howling, or whining voice. It is widely kept as a pet or for work or field sports.
~The denotation for a mongoose is a small carnivorous mammal with a long body and tail.
Connotation-
~For example when your say your a dog the connotation is that your ugly or a jerk.
~The word has different connotations when used in different contexts.
First Person Point if View-
~I walked down the dark alley way alone.
~First person point of view stories are told by a single character throughout.
Third Person Limited Point of View-
~Jack was scared to admit he liked Jill, but he feared her reaction more than anything.
~J.K. Rowling used third person limited point of view in Harry Potter the Chamber of Secrets.
Third Person Omniscient Point of View-
~Penny walked quickly towards the ice cream shop, Her face a study in grief.
~Third person omniscient point of view is narrated by a narrator who already knows the whole plot.
Situational Irony-
~She expected the cake to turn out great but instead it turned out terrible.
~Situational irony is when you expect something and the exact opposite occurs.
Verbal Irony-
~Example: When something bad happens and you say," Oh fantastic".
~Verbal irony is used a lot in figurative language.
Dramatic Irony-
~During a movie about an animal attack the audience usually sees the animal stalking before the character gets attacked.
~Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows a piece of the plot that the character doesn't.
Symbol-
~A red rose usually symbolizes love and romance.
~Symbolism is used a lot in fairy tales.
