What's Happening at the "D"

V5 #11 2018/2019

A note from the Principal...

Hello DeKeyser families,

I wanted to take this opportunity to share some exciting news! This summer, DeKeyser Elementary will benefit from the passing of the 2018 Bond! Thank you so much to the parents and community members who voted "Yes" on the bond, which will bring important safety and security improvements to all of Utica Schools!

For our school, the summer construction will redesign our front entrance/lobby/front office so it is more secure. Construction includes new lobby doors and lobby walls so visitors coming in to DeKeyser will be directed into the front office, with no immediate access to student areas.

Construction will begin the day after the last day of school, June 17th. Since the front office will not be accessible, it will be relocated. Front office staff will be in the Science Room June 17th - June 26th. There will be signage directing visitors to the back parking lot, near the entrance of the Science/Art/Music Wing. We break for summer and then we will return to work around August 7th.

Look for a "What's Happening at the "D" newsletter to keep you updated!

With gratitude,

Mary Beth Merlo

Parent Input Forms 2019/2020

With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are in the beginning stages of looking toward next year. As a staff, we spend considerable time carefully balancing classes. Staff reflects on general academics, gender, sociability, and disciplinary situations when placing students.

Parent Input forms are available in the front office. If you choose to fill one out, the parent input form will be shared with teachers during the decision making process. Specific teacher names will be blacked out. We are not able to honor specific teacher requests, as it is extremely difficult to keep the balance needed throughout each grade level.

Due to planning for the next school year, no forms will be accepted after June 1st. Emails will not be considered, for consistency, please use the Parent Input Form.

April Pod Pals

At our April Pod Pals, our focus was how we are all different/unique/special and one thing that we have in common and brings us together is our ability to be kind to one another. Our Pod Pal groups completed a Color Symbol Image (CSI) Visible Thinking Routine on Kindness. The CSI Routine helps with big ideas and pushes students to think metaphorically. Metaphors develop understanding by making connections and comparisons. A lower elementary class was buddied-up with an upper elementary class to complete the learning task.

The annual UCS Career Focus Luncheon

Nearly 2,000 UCS sixth graders will be meeting May 1-2 for the annual Career Focus Luncheon, being sponsored by the UCS Foundation for Educational Excellence, in partnership with Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce. It will provide an opportunity for the district's sixth graders, their teachers and principals to meet with local business and community leaders. As members of the Graduating Class of 2025, it will also acquaint students with the variety of career opportunities which exist.

Patricia Lopez, President of Rose-A-Lee Technologies will provide the keynote address.

Digital Information and Communication Technology - Smart Phones and Smart Watches

Utica Community Schools has a school board policy to address Digital Information and Communication Technology. Unless being used for teacher initiated educational purposes, Smart Phones and Smart Watches can be kept in student backpacks turned off. Parking Lot Safety

Safety is number one!

I have heard some concerns from parents lately about parents not following the flow of traffic. If you would like to park on the left side of the parking lot, please follow proper traffic flow and drive through the parking lot. A diagram of traffic flow is attached.

As a reminder:

~The flow of traffic is one way.

~Driving to the parking lot behind the building is NOT allowed, no student drop off in the back of the building.

~Please be courteous to other drivers, kids are most likely within earshot and modeling patience will benefit their learning.

Thank you! :)
